The Odyssey (Wordsworth Classics)

I bought this because it is the early modern Chapman translation. It really is excellent. Might not be to everyone's taste or philosophy of translation, and if you want an easier read there are loads to choose from. Book itself is surprizingly good quality for the very reasonable price. It has a slim but informative introduction, a glossary, and helpful notes.

Great and funny story of 17cent Spain, a little difficult to read, small text and translation

While it's hard to say this without ever having read the original Greek, I dare say this is an excellent English rendition of The Odyssey. I can only imagine it is as rythmic as the original, which is quite a lot to say considering that translating Greek into English while keeping the metric of the text must be quite challenging. Although I must make clear I never read any other English translation of The Odyssey, my final impression of this translation was that of a fine example of unmissable ancient literature made accessible to present times.

I'm not too well-read in the classics, but I can say for sure that Homer's 'Odyssey' will be a favourite, no matter how many of the timeless novels I read! At first, I was thinking that the novel was a little heavy (not literally!) for casual reading, but after familiarising myself with the characters (there aren't too many to learn), I found that it read as smoothly as many 20th century books.

Hard work reading this - I had forgotten that it was issued in poetic form with old fashioned language. Getting used to better interpretation as time goes by!.
