Full disclosure - I am an old guy - I am in my 50's and bought my first U2 single, I Will Follow, when I was in Grade 10. I have followed them through their peaks and valleys since. I didn't enjoy everything, but on a whole, their canon is pretty impressive. They have invented / re-invented themselves four times and, in the process, became the biggest rock band in the world. It's pretty darned inspiring that this band continues to write songs of conscience and faith and encourage its audience to become involved in politics for the greater good. Of course, in the process, the band (Bono in particular) have been unfairly accused of being self-righteous, pompous, and hypocritical. Haters gotta hate, I guess. I don't listen to much new rock music these days - partly because it's a real effort to find rock music - Peter Buck from R.E.M. once commented that you need to seek out good rock music, like Jazz fans had to do in the 50's and 60's. Looking at the pop charts, the music of choice these days is pop, urban, hip-hop, or country. Currently, the most popular rock bands have integrated urban music rhythms and effects (Arcade Fire, Bon Iver), something that U2 did in the 90's. Songs of Experience is the sound of U2 doing one of the things they do best - soaring melodies, layered harmonies & arrangements, and lyrics written to lift up the listener. The album is absolutely is very solid and their strongest since 1997, despite the fact that it doesn't pander to current music trends (well, aside from the auto tune on "Love is All We Have Left" and some of the remixes at the end of the album). It's a shame that it isn't selling - but not surprising. Classic Rock stations will continue to play songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's to death and ignore the new music from the artists that they are playing, thus killing rock music. What a shame! If you have enjoyed U2 in the early 2000's, do yourself a favour and pick this album up. It is more consistent than both "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and "How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb", and so much better than the hipster reviews suggest (Pitchfork!). It's true that they aren't breaking any new ground here, but after almost 40 years of music, they don't need to. They are trying to keep rock music alive....BUY THIS RECORD!!
