Harder Than I Thought To Use
Pros:FunctionalEducationalCalculates13-DigitAncient Chinese Mathematics ToolDurableCons:NoneWhat I received in the package:1 x BLACK LONG DI FANG Standard AbacusThis BLACK LONG DI FANG Standard Abacus product I ordered as I have always had a curiosity about how these work but never had a chance or reason to try one. This on has five beads below deck and two beads topside. Never having used an Abacus before, there were several features that I liked about this without having any real knowledge. The material and workmanship of this item seem to be good. The beads move very easily, almost too easy. I feel like I can make a mistake without even trying. In reading the manual, I was a bit overwhelmed by the instructions. But with some time and effort … this is supposed to be a great tool. I guess using this will help expand your mind and depend less on modern technology.I appreciate you taking the time to read this. All in all, this seems like a decent Soroban, The beads move smoothly and almost effortlessly. The product is sturdy and seems to be made well. I will keep working at it and get better at using this. Hope this information was helpful. [4 Stars]

Okay after a bit of sanding. Still lightweight beads but bigger makes this better.
This is not an abacus I would use for the rest of my life. The glossy wood finish feels overdone and rushed, rough in some parts, slightly dripping in others. The beads are a great size but very light, like the little one I found on eBay. HOWEVER. If you've only had shitty abacuses bought from here in the US, this is the best one I could find so far. Nothing like the YouTube videos I see of Chinese people owning them for their careers, though. You won't get the dense clack or stable bead position from this one. I like how the book included actually talks about a multiplication method!Amazon thinks this is a toy. It's an all-ages analog calculator.

Does not include the book pictured in the description.
I like the abacus. The basic instruction book that is pictured in the description does not come with the abacus. One of the reasons I bought this was because it had the basic instruction book included. Disappointing.

When you open the box and see it, you see quality. It doesn't just look cheap and breakable.
I got it for my mom cuz it reminded her of one her late brother give her when she was a kid. She was so ecstatic! And yes it comes with instructions.

A great teaching tool, includes 20 page book
This Abacus is well made and it comes with a WONDERFUL 20 page instruction manual that explains how to add, subtract, multiply and even divide using an Abacus. This Abacus is a great way to demonstrate how math was done before adding machines, calculators and computers, and how some of those later inventions were inspired by an Abacus just like this.I should point out that this is a "Chinese" Abacus, which features 2 beads at the top, and there are other types that only have 1 bead at the top. Although they are both based on the same concepts, I feel that as long as you're looking for a replica of a historic device, why not go back to the original version, the Chinese "Suanpan" or "Calculating Tray".With this layout each column can represent a digit, so with 13 columns, you can represent a HUGE number, so you are not likely to use anything past the first few columns unless you are working with decimals. For example if you are calculating US dollars, you would work entirely in cents, so the right 2 columns would be 0 to 99 cents.Anyhow, I love the fact that they included the booklet. I already knew how addition and subtraction were done, so I'm looking forward to exploring multiplication and division. As an IT professional, I get a kick out of how some of these concepts made their way into modern computer design.

fun and interesting to use
This was nostalgic for me, I remember using an abacus in grade school and loved it! The instruction booklet is straightforward and easy to work through. But I recalled the abacus having only 1 bead on top this one has 2 beads. The concept is the same though. I was working on it and my older grandkids caught on pretty quickly adding basic numbers ( no decimals or multiplication yet). They are delighted to try a new way of counting and are showing their friends. Something old is new again, fun and functional for both kids and adults. The abacus is well made, the beads move smoothly ( perhaps a bit too easily should you accidentally knock the abacus) You may need to supplement the instruction booklet with a video online.
