Not her best, but not bad
This album came about because Dolly was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She then made an off the cuff comment about needing to then make a rock album. The album just kind of grew (and grew and grew) from there. This is NOT Dolly's first album of rock covers, nor is it her first album to feature a who's who of guest stars. She's done three previous album of pop/rock covers, "The Great Pretender" in 1984, "Treasures" from 1996 and "Those Were The Days" in 2005. "RockStar" is just getting WAY more hype. There are 30 songs on this album, that's a lot to take in. Not everything works, and yes, it could have probably been a great single disc, 15-20 song album. But she left nothing on the table. The album opens with on a cringy note with her "parents" telling her to turn down that noise. Not a great way to kick off a "serious" rock album. "World On Fire" on of the nine originals on the album is one of the stronger tracks, in fact an album of just her originals would have made for a fine album. "I Want You Back" with Steven Tyler and "Tried To Rock And Roll Me" with Melissa Etheridge are both standouts. Of the covers, there are three BIG ones on here, "Purple Rain", "Stairway To Heaven" and "Free Bird". She does a decent job on all three. No, they don't surpass the original versions, but they aren't supposed to. Many people of covered "Purple Rain" and no one has ever heard one of those covers and thought "Now THAT'S how Prince should have done it!!!". Dolly's version is no different, but it's decent. This is her second stab at "Stairway To Heaven", her first attempt is a gospel take on her 2002 album "Halos & Horns". This time around she sticks to the original arrangement. "Free Bird" features the vocals of Ronnie Van Zandt and it creates a haunting feel. There is one other original song on the album, "What Has Rock And Roll Ever Done For You" written by Stevie Nicks, who appears on the track. The song was demoed around the time of Stevie's 1985 album "Rock A Little". It's a fun track, although the song does contain some lighthearted banter between Stevie and Dolly. This type of banter pops up here and there across the album. Dolly does it to show she's having fun, but it gives the songs an almost novelty feel, as if they didn't already have that. Dolly's voice has aged, as have the voices of many of the guests. Had she done this album 20-25 years ago, I think it would have made for a better album. If you didn't know, you wouldn't guess that it was Steve Perry on "Open Arms" or Kevin Cronin on "Keep On Loving You". It sounds like someone doing a bad impression of Michael McDonald on the otherwise great "Bittersweet". Elton John, Rob Halford, Paul McCartney and Emmylou Harris really show their ages on their tracks. Is it Dolly's best album? No. Is the album for everyone? No. Fans of the original songs may not like what she's done to them, but fans of Dolly will probably like the album. The album has been talked about for almost a full year. Now it's here and although there is a lot to digest, there is a lot to like. More to like, than dislike.

Great CD
I'm a big fan of Dolly and this CD exceeded my expectation. It was slightly different to her usual music but still very enjoyable. I liked the addition of the original artists where they joined in on their tracks.
