I bought this book to learn about concrete nouns, there are no concrete nouns...

Livro veio perfeito e sem nenhum defeito estético. Livro denso e com conteúdo rico para estudantes avançados em inglês. Certamente um biblia para quem deseja aprofundar e reforçar o conhecimento em inglês.

初版（1980）は398頁＋indexであった。昔OUPの人に聞いた話では予想外に（特に日本で）よく売れて、改訂版を継続的に出すことになったという。2版（1995）以降はサイズが少し大きくなり658頁(indexを含む)、3版（2005）も同じく658頁(indexを含む)で、4版は635頁+indexとなった。３版までは語彙項目・文法用語とりまぜてアルファベット配列であった。たとえば、discourse marker は、D 見出しの…different, direct speech の次にあった。しかし、４版ではアルファベット配列は廃止され、語彙項目と文法用語は区別されて，文法用語はテーマ別配列となった（表紙にはcomplete topic-by-topic grammar/ guide to over 250 vocabulary problems とある）。different はSection 31 Word Problems from A to Zで、direct speech はSection 24 Noun Clauses, Direct and Indirect Speech で取り上げられている。discourse markerはdiscourse markers in writingとdiscourse markers in speech に分類され，前者はSection 26 Written Textsで、後者はSection 27 Speech and Spoken Exchanges で取り上げられている。文法用語の有機的関連性を見る上では有効な改訂だと思われるが、辞書を引くようなかたちでは検索が不可能である。構成を熟知するまではIndexから入って行くしか方法がないだろう。語彙項目は上述のSection 31 Word Problems from A to Z(アルファベット配列）で辞書を引くように引ける。 まず本書の構成に慣れるのに時間がかかりそうである。構成は大まかにいえば文法辞典がメインで語法辞典が付録的存在になったということだろうか。これまでPractical English Usage といえば語法辞典という印象が強かったので戸惑いが大きい。語法解説の変化など旧版との違いを取り上げるのは、構成に慣れてからということになるだろう。気がついたことがあれば追加情報として報告します。

De lo mejor que he visto para repasar muchos puntos de gramática y vocabulario a un nivel de detalle, claridad y rigor muy por encima de la media de los libros de texto que he manejado hasta el momento. Estupendo para aclarar dudas, afianzar la gramática gracias a unas explicaciones muy claras y trabajadas. Texto de muy buena calidad.
