Can this be used to fill gaps on VOG (vinyl on gypsum) wall board after removing battens?

Yes, but don't expect to fill large gaps without some structural support. For large gaps (1/2 inch and larger) consider a support together filling the gap in stages.

Is there any disadvantage to using this over the pink stuff or the fast dry or fast n final spackling?

When layering these type products to fill dents, holes or cracks ready to paint to hide, I try to start with harder slower drying products and finish with lighter weight, faster drying easier to sand products. The faster drying / easier sanding products tend to be weaker.
