I don't know what the flavor of Maple is supposed to be, but this flavor of Calorie Mate has a mild syrup smell and has a good taste

Bought as a bit of a joke for my husband, a huge metal gear fan. Jokes on me, they are freaking amazing. He wants more of them, so I'm just waiting for a sale to grab a few more for him. They taste really good!

Despite this food being mostly known in North America for being featured in the Metal Gear Solid games, CalorieMate has been a mainstay of the busy on-the-go Japanese lifestyle for quite some time. Each package of CalorieMate is divided into two foil pouches, and each pouch contains two blocks of the food. Each block is 100 calories, meaning that if you have one block it's a nice snack, and if you have a whole box it might replace a light meal. They're extremely dense but not difficult to eat; think almost like a dense shortbread cookie. Nutritionally, they're nothing to write home about; they certainly aren't meant to be a long-term solution. Still, in an emergency, it's a good thing to have on hand. The maple flavor is remarkably strong even from the first bite, and it's not just a hint of it. I love maple syrup and so biting into this to try it out was a delight. I've tried a couple of other flavors of the food before but I think this is my new favorite. My only complaint is that the packages I got had a very near "best by" date, only about 4 months. If you're buying these to put in an emergency kit or a get-out-now bag, make sure you keep an eye on their shelf life and rotate them out as you need to. Not that you'll complain too much if you end up eating the ones you're replacing.

I finally decided to try these after a friend of mine brought a few back from Japan and raved about how good they were but then refused to share any. Most uncool we are frenemies now.😠 They very much taste like a short bread cookie. I'm happy to report there is no overwhelming butter / shortening flavor as some shortbread cookies are known to have and the maple flavor is not overpowering but pretty well balanced. There are tiny maple flavored bits infused into each bar (4 bars total per box sealed in 2 separate packets) and the 2 boxes I received are good through 2027 so a decent shelf life which is great as I'm keeping one in the car as a stuck in grid-lock traffic for hours snack. They are a dry moderately dense cookie bar which made the box I ate already perfect for dunking in coffee or tea if you like. I am looking forward to trying some of the other flavors.

These are actually quite tasty. A little dry, but a whole lot better than Russian rations or flying squirrel. And they're Para-Medic approved! Perfect for an afternoon picnic in Sokrevenno, or just a snack while exploring the wonders of Grozny Grad. Also, since I can get these on Amazon, I no longer have to crawl under trucks or creep along dangerous ledges to get them. And because it's a lot of calories in a small package, I can carry quite a few of them in my (apparently invisible) pack, along with my hundreds of pounds of weapons and ammo. Not to mention about twenty different changes of clothes. Obviously space is at a premium! Seriously, these are good. Kinda expensive, but they're a novel snack for any MGS fan. Also not a bad idea for an emergency preparedness kit. High in calories, small in size. Box measures 4 in. by 4 1/4 in. by 3/4 in. Each box is 400 calories(4 bars, 100 calories each). Make Major Zero proud, and give them a try. I doubt you'll regret it!

If you buy this because of MGS3, congratulations! Otherwise I shall introduce you this yummy dietary supplement snack. Each box contains two small packets, and each packets contains two shortbread kind of cookies at the size of a finger. Each of the cookies contains 100 calories and all other nutrients that keep you fulfilled for hours from hungry. Taste is good, really really good, identical to the maple that you have with maple syrup for pancakes. It is little bit dry to taste so it is recommended to consume it with plenty of water as it works best when it expands in the stomach so it reach its performance to keep you full. Recommend? Yes. Buy again? Yes yes!
