A Cyprus Journey: Memoirs of National Service

AN ENJOYABLE PERSONAL ACCOUNT
I bought this book to research for a fictional character in my own novel, who serves during the same period, and I needed him in Cyprus for these frontline activities. Firstly, then, I am grateful to Mr Balmer for providing me with what I needed - a well crafted account of his personal recollections and reflections during this interesting period in his own (and my character's) life. At the same time, this is a hugely enjoyable read, accepting that this is a 'Gunner's Tale' and never intended to portray the political and social impacts of another aspect of the reshaping of the world order. Mr Balmer admirably balances the humdrum of army life with the humour essential to survive it, alongside details of the skills he acquires, the people he works with, and the flavour of the people and the small part of Cyprus where he served. Well done, Gunner Balmer.

A really good read
Very accurate account of "call up" according to an old soldier pal who served in Cyprus. Is it interesting to younger readers say under age 70? Yes it is. Very interesting modern history of a group of temporary soldiers facing the real thing. This was the 2 year conscription for a whole generation of teenagers before teenagers were invented. A very good read. One small criticism. The copy I bought had small fairly faint print. Now as the buying customers are liable to be old codgers like I , this is not a well thought out idea.

interesting vignettes of army life in late 50s Cyprus
As I like to cover all aspects of recent Cypriot history, this book did provide me with some new facts, mainly about life in the camps and how the soldiers faced the challenges of the colonial conflict. Great joke about the tired donkeys! Interesting comments about fairness in the British Army.

book on national service.
I have read it and thought extremely well written and good value. I knew my husband during that time so remember his thoughts from the time.Reason I bought was because I had my late husband's Active Service Medal when he served in Cyprus during 1955 - 1957 confict. I am going to give it to my grandson of 23 with a memory box and thought the book would give him a good insight into National Service and particularly relating to his grandfather's service in Cyprus.

cyprus
I did National service in Cyprus, and was interested how Albert Balmer dealt with it.Many people have different views on National Service and It was best to deal with it as best as one could.A reasonable narrative.

Readable
A book lacking a lot of detail. Am a bit surprised Cyprus was used in the title as the book didn't mention a lot about Cyprus, very little detail about Cyprus. Maybe author Albert Balmer would have had a better book with a different title, it would seem to me that Cyprus was used as a selling point.
