Is it necessary to replace both switches in a 3-way circuit with smart wireless switches?

In response to DamanicGar asking about having a 4 way.  It shouldn’t make a difference.  When you have a 4 way , there is a 3 way wired before it on the line side and after it on the load side(light side).  You can have infinite amount of 4 ways in between the 2- 3 ways.  So your smart switch could go on the line side- power from the panel hits the switch, 2 traveler wires leave the 3 way and go to the 4 way, 2 traveler wires leave the 4 way and go to the last 3 way and then the load wire on the black terminal goes to the light.  ( neutral wires are just wirenutted through and not switched).   The smart switch can also go on the load side 3 way.  Having a 4 way in the middle doesn’t make a difference.  There is always power on the line side 3 way and there is always power at the load side 3 way( power alternates which traveler wire it is on depending on the position of the other switches).  All that to say, the smart switch would not even know that there is a 4 way even there. All the 4 way is doing is switching which traveler has power going to the load 3 way.

Can the switches still be used manually--without Alexa or the Kasa app once set up?

Yes - you can simply press the physical switch on the device to manually turn the lights on or off.

can these use standard decora wall plates?

Yes, you can. I don’t know why people have had issues, but I have installed dozens of various Kasa switches and always use third party decorator plates. They have always sat flush against the sheet rock. If there is a gap, you are either not using flat headed screws to attach the switch, or it’s not installed all of the way.

Question 4

this comes with 2 switches.  Can i use this on 2 different sets of lights?  such as the front porch and the back porch independently of each other.

You ever get the one 3-way switch to work?  I tried and can't seem to get it to work with only 1 switch installed.  I have power and I when I switch the light off with my phone I can hear a click in the switch, but the lights do not turn on or off.  During the installation process the final steps walk through a process to pair the 2 switches.  I just "nexted" through the pairing steps.  Not sure if it not working because it is not paired with the other switch.
