Why do these need power? And should I just buy the newer version , that come with a power supply?

You need the power for the components that convert the signal to HDMI from a Coax (SDI) connection. You need power regardless of which unit you buy. The one that comes with a power supply is the only difference from the one that does not. I buy about 1/2 and 1/2 - without power supply and with power supply. The micro USB port on the back is where the power plugs into the unit. The ones I get with no power supply, still require power but I have a bunch of 18" USB to micro USB cables that are not used. I plug into the USB on a TV or Projector to get the power and a 1 foot HDMI cable from this unit to the TV or Projector and it is all closely contained. I purchase the ones with the power supply to use in locations where I won't be close to a USB but have power close by. Like at the main equipment rack for the broadcasting. I don't have empty USB ports and so I rely on the power plug. Another reason for a unit with No power supply, in case something happens to one that has a power supply, I don't need another power supply, I need to get another SDI to HDMI converter, just use the old power supply. Blackmagic Design markets their equipment smartly. So there are reasons that they sell both with and without a power supply, but regardless, you need power for these units to work. I hope this helps

Will this convert analog sdi to hdmi out? i have a canon xha1s with analog sdi out. if not, what would you recommend?

SDI = Serial DIGITAL Interface. Nothing analog about it. From Wiki: Serial digital interface (SDI) is a family of digital video interfaces first standardized by SMPTE (The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) in 1989.[1][2] For example, ITU-R BT.656 and SMPTE 259M define digital video interfaces used for broadcast-grade video. A related standard, known as high-definition serial digital interface (HD-SDI), is standardized in SMPTE 292M; this provides a nominal data rate of 1.485 Gbit/s.[3]. Other than that, I own two of these (and their opposites, HDMI to SDI and they save me about 200# in the pack... 800' of SDI cable weighs a LOT less than 800' of VGA.

I just connected this to a usb port on my computer and it was reading it as an actual device. is the usb connector for power only?

USB is for power, firmware upgrades, and programming of the device - not much to program, but it is there. Your computer sees it as a device but you need the Blackmagic Converters Setup Utility to read and program the device - you download that from the BMD website

Can i run a 2k image (sdi) from a camera to the converter and send to a monitor (hdmi 1080p) and loop the picture to another sdi monitor?

Nope, they don't support anything over 1080 60

Cool. Smaller in person (like any celebrity, except Gina Davis, she's much taller than you'd think. This is the Tom Cruise of converters). 100% functional so far. Good video and all audio channels. Ironically am using it to fix the HDMI output from a couple of Decklink Mini Monitors, which flicker with receivers (tried 4 different) which when going SDI-HDMI work fine. Ironic, because theis BMD unit is fixing other BMD units. They claim its an EDID protocol thing, but then, okay. Anyway yes, good. Carry on.

Turns your consumer grade HDMI monitors into an SDI monitor for $40

We used velcro to adhere one of these to each of our rental TV's. They are cleverly powered via the USB port that most monitors have nowadays, and have made deployment of our TV's over long distance runs simple, and cost effective. We have had no problems as of yet with these recognizing multiple resolutions and formats sent over SDI.

I had issues with Connecting a Projector to a iMac using a USB-C to HDMI Dongle. We have Tried a C2G Rapid Run Cable and HD BaseT extenders with flickering issues. had a friend introduce these this wonders to me over the summer and I am not disappointed. Ran some RG6 between the points, connected the receiver and transmitter and presto, perfect image. Very happy with the results with a 1080P image. we used the USB ports on the projector and computer to power the units since it is only 5v. my friend used these for a 250ft run for a 1080P image with an iMac also and it worked flawlessly.

Works as expected

Nice thing about it, you can power it with a battery pack for your smart phone. It is very sturdy, a bit on the heavier side, but I would buy it again.
