Translation Only, Who is the Translator?
This book has a bespoke, self-published format and it provides English translations, but with no introduction, annotations, or discussion of translation methods or texts. There is no information about the translator in or on the book. 200 pages are devoted to the series of Chen's Tai Chi form photos, one regular sized photo per page. The photos in the book include the new high quality sword form photos that appeared online in recent years.Paul Brennan's translations would suffice for the English-only student: they cover the same complete set of texts, and include the original Chinese text along with English translation, paragraph by paragraph. This Chen Faxing translation does provide an English-only print format that might make for easier reading in English for some. I can't comment on translation quality.Bradford Tyrey offers an interesting translation (also a self-published, Amazon exclusive) of Chen's sword text and a separate volume of extensive commentaries by Chen Weiming and Fu Zhongwen. It includes an introduction that talks about the origin of the text and a little about the translator. It would be worth checking out alongside the material covered in in this one-volume collection.
