GORDON DEXTER
R**N
A masterpiece of tenor playing.
Recorded in 1962 for Blue Note we find Dexter Gordon in expansive mood. He is accompanied by Sonny Clark (p), Butch Warren (b) and Billy Higgins (d). This was recorded shortly before his fortieth birthday and is his tenth album as leader, his first being in 1947. He had recorded also as a sideman. This experience is evident here where he plays with confidence and inventiveness. His tone is full and deep. There are six tracks in total and everyone is a gem. The opening track is his own "Cheesecake" an uptempo workout. Later we have "Love For Sale" again taken at breakneck speed. Interspersed are some ballads. This album demonstrates the skill of Dexter Gordon to the full, but it is more than that; it is great entertainment. Modern jazz played with competence by a top quartet.

If you only buy one Dexter Gordon, buy this.
Effortlessly cool this studio recording has a live nightclub air about it.The 4 players are really tight and this disc features DG's defining performance of Cheesecake.I love this album so much I named my son Dexter because if it!
