So true to the original that it is nearly impossible to read
I foolishly bought this copy because it was cheaper than any others, not realizing how difficult it would be to read an edition other than the one my college bookstore was selling. The book is, obviously, the autobiography of a slave, and as such is extremely difficult for a modern reader to read due to different spelling, punctuation, and word choice. Other editions have the original text on one side of a page and a more basic summary/translation on the other, but this one is THE ORIGINAL TEXT with no annotation or changes. If you're looking for the text EXACTLY how it was written, this may be your book, but for me it was almost impossible to read and understand.

Gives a personal account, not a 3rd person one

Amazing story
Just a forewarning, this book is in it's original form and not in the modernized Spanish. With that being said, it is difficult to read a times. But I think it makes the story more raw and empowering!

Impressive first voice narrative in 19th century Spanish
The book is in 19th century Spanish. It is a slim, soft-back volume containing an impressive story - a classic of colonial-era Cuba - and an interesting introduction. I liked that the original voice of the first-person narrator has been preserved including spelling, specific terms and turns of phrase; this sometimes makes it hard to read but I found it more than worth the effort. Printing is clear, typeface size looks medium.
