Excellent
My son has read a number of the books in the “Who was” history series. Sandbrook’s book on World War II is far superior. Unlike the “Who was” series, Sandbrook provides more than facts. He gives the reader an adventurous and exciting narrative that is highlighted by his wonderful prose. My son couldn’t put the book down. He can’t wait to read the other books in the series.

Brilliant writing
My daughter (11 years) read it and encouraged me to do so as she said it “taught her loads!”. Am ashamed to say I was embarrassed by my lack of knowledge of WW2 (aged 40+) and learnt so much myself. It was a humbling read. It was also written in such a clever way; very detailed, but written concisely enough to keep an 11 year old engaged. She and I both thought the personal stories interspersed in the text humanised the trauma and horror of what people went through. All in all an excellent book. (As a parent the information was detailed and informative but written age appropriately too. The brutality of the war was communicated, but in a child friendly way….an extremely trick task as an author, but one that Mr Sanbrook achieved. All credit to him).

If I could I would put 1000000 stars
Amazing for kids who love history. It picks out individual people and informs you of them.it also talks about both sides and goes a tiny bit into the Cold War at the end.
