Ordered a new book, appeared to receive a second hand one
The packaging was fine, but the book itself was damaged and worn. See photos. Spine cracked in three places, corner bent over and a large ugly sticker pasted on the back! The contents, no argument there, this is a great little book. If you receive a damaged one, return it for a refund or replacement which you are entitled to. If you want this book, you really don't want it in anything other than mint condition because that is what it deserves! I've given 5 stars because of the book, not the condition this one was in.

Excellent introduction and transaltion of one of the great foundational religious texts.
The introduction and translation is by Mascaro who had a great sensivity to mystical / religious matters.

Inspiration in daily life
I heard some of this on a retreat. I've read other translations by Juan Mascaro and he captures the spiritual and reflective quality of teachings. So if you want inspiration and connected moments in your daily life then I recommend this beautiful translation. If you are studying Buddhism then there may be other newer more scholarly translations. So far, I am dipping into this and always find something helpful and uplifting. Enjoy!

Mascaro's edition is flawless
This is a life changing book! Wonderful, thought-provoking short sayings with plenty to ponder and transform yourself by. I can hear the Buddha's words echoed by Jesus Christ, which is so affirming. The introduction is also excellent and well worth a read. It places the Buddha's sayings in parallel with Hindu, Taoist and Christian teaching, which is helpful. Just don't buy from World of Books: their product descriptions are unreliable. I thought I was buying a 'very good' but it was barely 'acceptable' and not the edition illustrated but a much older one. My star rating really reflects the book World of Books gave me rather than the one they advertised.

The Buddha's own prescription perfectly translated by Juan Mascaro. What more could you ask for in a book? Try doing it.

A brilliant introduction
Although there are plenty of Dhammapada translations, this one is very insightful especially regarding its introduction.

Sublime Dhamma
It is the noble, sublime, supreme Dhamma taught by the Blessed Ones, the Arahants, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones. May you take the Dhammapada, keep it with you, wherever you go. Be diligent, ardent, resolute. Practice the Dhamma. With lots of loving-kindness Raymond

It is an exquisite translation by Juan Mascaro, conveying the essence in a simple, and profound way. I had a chance to read 2 other translation by others and this version by Juan Mascaro takes the cake.

Yet another classic!
The Dhammapada is such a short read, but what a read! It is literally 90 pages. You can finish it in a couple of hours, OR take your time, read a chapter a day and just let the knowledge soak in. This was required school reading (years ago). I remembered the name and purchased the book once more. This is a fantastic translation; I can't imagine another edition being as easy and understandable. I think we can all come to an agreement that many religions have a similar universal truth. Those interested in the "I Ching" and the "Tao Te Ching" - you need to add this book to your collection. Here we find another short masterpiece filled to the brim with words of wisdom. I mean it really makes you think that if everyone read this book and made a small conscious effort, the world would be a much better place to live in. Well, forget world peace for a second; if you're looking for inner peace, get this book and you'll be on the right track... Let me end off with a few precious notes: "To live one day full of virtue, wisdom, courage & deep contemplation is better than 100 years without it". Every day, one should take a few minutes to reflect and appreciate all of the little things that life has to offer. We are all filled with pride - way too much pride. It is imperative that we rid ourselves of this awful trait, and fill its' void with healthier qualities such as virtue, humility, meekness, simplicity, humbleness, sincerity and truth above all. Every day, we need to strive for the betterment of ourselves: to seek wisdom from others and apply it so that we can perfect our own personality, our own nature. In this life, you reap what you sow therefore; take advantage of the true treasures around you while you can. For once these priceless gifts are gone - they will not return so, use your time wisely and live in harmony. Goodness is a habit - a beautiful habit!!! Plant its' seed and watch it grow and cultivate!!!
