From the Author As a child in West Virginia, Cynthia Rylant never dreamed of becoming a writer. In her free time, she devoured Archie comic books and paperback romances and enjoyed the outdoors. But after taking one college English class, she was, “hooked on great writing… I didn’t know about this part of me until I went to college-didn’t know I loved beautiful stories.” And one night, inspired by the Southern writer James Agee, she sat down and wrote When I Was Young in the Mountains. Named a Caldecott Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, it was an instant success.Since that night, Rylant hasn’t stopped creating wonderful books. Her stories explore friendship, love, grief, and other mysteries, and often draw on her memories of growing up in Appalachia. “I get a lot of personal gratification thinking of those people who don’t get any attention in the world and making them really valuable in my fiction-making them absolutely shine with their beauty.”She lives with her many pets in the Pacific Northwest.Mark Teague is an award-winning children's book author and illustrator whose books include the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling How Do Dinosaurs... series, the LaRue series, FIREHOUSE!, FUNNY FARM, and many other humorous picture books. Book Review
{My thoughts} – This is a series of books that are in the middle of being republished. They are a loved children’s series that is fairly popular. I am actually enjoying the fact that Scholastic has decided to release them under the Acorn brand.Poppleton is a fun pig. He lives a simple life and has a nice set of friends. He enjoys spending time with his friends, going to the library and helping his friends when they aren’t feeling well. This book is written in short sentences on each page, which helps to not overwhelm the young reader. It is nicely illustrated so that the images and the story blend nicely with one another. At the end of the book is some added content including how to draw your very own Poppleton. I found that to be rather neat. I am always interested in seeing how the illustrators create their illustrations.I look forward to reading more books in this series as they are released. I also can’t wait to share these books with my littles when they are old enough to start reading them!

Very, very disappointed
I got this for my grand daughter. It had such good reviews, I couldn't wait to read it to her. We both asked "Why would the pig spray his friend?" It wasn't funny at all. We were able to talk about friends and how they should treat each other, so in that way it was good.

Pig moves from city to country; fascinating, cozy book
It's about a fascinating pig and his slightly overbearing neighbor Cherry Sue, beautifully illustrated. We learn that there's a reason she's been overbearing and all is well when they both learn the truth and become great friends. You cannot go wrong with Cynthia Rylant.

Very entertaining
This is our first introduction to Poppleton. My son and I both love him. There are three short stories in this book (Neighbors, The Library, and The Pill). They are all very entertaining. We especially love "Neighbors" where Poppleton cannot control himself and sprays his neighbor with the hose. The picture in this scene is hilarious and actually makes both of us laugh out loud. My five year old son has requested more of these books, which is about the highest praise you can get from a reader. I would highly recommend this book due to the nice bed time length of the stories, the lovely illustrations, and the comical life of the pig named Poppleton. Happy reading!!

Poppleton by Cynthia Rylant
Wonderful book for children from 5 to 8. I bought it to replace a well loved copy which had been read many times over. Each of my Grandchildren loved it and were able to understand the humour in it. The story about the Pill hidden the cake was the favourite.
