A child virtuoso whose piano recitals were local events, Dr. Nina Simone started her musical career as a classically trained pianist, strongly rooted in the study of the works of Bach, and became a singer almost by accident. The rest is history. Her recordings, over the next five decades, earned her cult status, critical acclaim and reached the top of the charts on many occasions.

Wonderful Nina Simone Collection.
A wonderful addition to the Original Album Series collection. Five Nina Simone albums on the Colpix label from the late 1950s and early 1960s, two of them atmospheric live albums. The earliest studio offering, "The Amazing... " is Nina at her cool jazz, languid best - the number "Theme from the Middle of the Night" immaculate and my personal favourite. The first of the live albums "...Town Hall" - again artistically top notch and the remastering really brings out the concert atmosphere. "Black is the Color... " is here surely the best interpretation of an all time classic. "Forbidden Fruit", released in 1961, has emotional and political intensity, probably the most powerful vocally, of the five. In contrast "... sings Ellington" , ... Nina swings, and fascinating to compare with Ella Fitzgerald's Duke interpretations. The final album, "Folksy Nina" is a bit of an oddity, an eclectic collection of material from her Carnegie Hall concert, not included on the live album of that name. Run out of superlatives, just buy and enjoy this classy and versatile artist.
