Hockey Plays and Strategies Review: Best hockey book available - I have to agree with the other 2 reviewers. I have read practically every hockey coaching/drill book and watched nearly every video out there, and this one is in a class all by itself. This book has plenty of diagrams, but also the detailed explanation that is lacking in drill books. Other books tell you how to run the drill. This book does that too, but also focuses on the subtler teaching points. This book explains what you are trying to do (e.g. having the second forward drive in hard splitting the defenders and isolating one to create a 2-on-1) and why it works. I wish I would have had this book 10 years ago. Review: This book is amazing! We have been using it with our two ... - This book is amazing! We have been using it with our two youth hockey players over the past couple of weeks as part of their day-off ice training. Both players are starting to recognize developing plays and situations on the ice, and are reacting better. Albeit, this book will not make them the next Crosby, it is helping them to learn various plays when in the offensive and defensive zones. This is helping them get "hockey smart", and by being able to read the developing plays, they are making better choices on the ice! I will be eager to see what their individual "playing levels" look like in a month or two, and compare the differences. A well written book, plenty of play diagrams, and explanations are easy to understand. A great off-ice training guide, to get hockey players to "think" about the game.

Great intro for novice players.
I picked this book up as someone who is just getting into adult recreational league hockey. Having been a fan of the NHL for the past 20 years, most of the terminology was familiar to me, but the book should be quite approachable for anyone. Even if you have no plans in coaching, I think you can benefit from the concepts and ideas which will provide you with a general overview of how hockey players are distributed and their offensive/defensive roles. In my experience, drop-in and novice league play aren't the most organized, but you can make your game more efficient by knowing general strategies in different situations.

A great aid to the novice
For a novice hockey fan like me, this book arms me with a much better understand of what i'm watching. I keep this book handy at all times and check things out dkuring almost every game I watch on TV. My home team is the Penguins, but I also really enjoy the Blackhawks and Red Wings, and Maple Leafs, but I'll watch any two pro teams. I never played the game. How they get that little puck through all those bodies and into the net is amazing to me.

would highly recommend it to any coach at any level to refresh ...
New asst coach pee wee level and I am learning tons and running drills per the book . would highly recommend it to any coach at any level to refresh and learn new stuff. breaks down all aspects of the game and in all zones if it could only help me deal with the attention span of a 12 year old I would be all set.

Great book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's the sort of book you can flip through from time-to-time, before a hockey practice or game, to refresh yourself on tips and tricks. I liked how the pages were large and the plays easy to read because of that. Highly recommend for a beginner like me... or someone more experienced looking for plays and strategies for the awesome game of hockey! :)

Great book
I've been having my Pee Wee hockey playing son read a chapter every week before his game and saw an immediate improvement after one chapter. He's a defenseman and his current coach doesn't spend enough time teaching tactics and strategy. He now teaching his teammates the techniques he's picked up from the book. The book has a nice combination of text and diagrams, so even if their comprehension or attention span is limited, the pictures reinforce and simplify the verbiage.

introduction to strategy
I wanted to deepen my understanding of the strategy of hockey. The book helped, but I think it needs to define the terms used in hockey, like off-sides, poke check, pinching, etc. I also wanted to learn the basic rules. The writing and diagrams made me feel bogged down at times. Perhaps this book is not the best for an introduction to the sport for the fans.

This book was exactly what I was looking for. It provides clear and concise explanations and diagrams of different plays/schemes for pretty much every different scenario you encounter in hockey.

Some good insight but some methodology is a bit dated
