Would they be good for stocking shelves (constant kneeling then standing repeated over and over...) Would they need constant adjustment?

Absolutely. I used them on a concrete factory floor to kneel and I could land hard the whole shift. Better over pants than shorts and depending on how much you move they slide down some so you'll have to pull them up but not strap adjustments. They stay put fairly well.

Where do the straps fit, since im kneeling frequently? Do th rivets hold?

Above and below the knees. so far rivets are holding. For me these are the best knee pads I have ever had.

Can these be machine washed?

They definitely could be. I would hang them to dry. I wouldn’t see a need to wash them though unless you get them saturated with sweat but if you wear them over pants there shouldn’t be much of a need to.

right & left? 2 pictures show as if there is a right & left, but comments, ratings, and answers all indicate only one orientation?

Both of my Alta knee pads connect to the right of the pad. That puts the pad that is on the left leg connecting on the inside of the leg and the pad that is on the right leg connecting on the outside of the leg. I have had my pads for several years of DIY projects and they are holding up well and are easy to put on and take off.
