What's the difference between this and a modified scrubbie?

Hi Anna. I now work with Drain Smart, so I hope this helps. But I'm also a long-term user of the container-drainer discs. I'm not sure how successful a scrubbie is in preventing the soil migrating out of the container or pot, but the Drain Smart discs are extremely durable and can be used year after year. Each disc is composed of a 3/8 inch thick nylon mesh with a layer of geo-filter fabric heat-welded to one side. The nylon mesh elevates the filter off the bottom of the planter, allowing water to drain over the entire surface of the disc. The free space provided by the filter fabric encourages the water to drain directly into the mesh and then out of the planter. I use them in all my containers, and the decks and patio are all clean from the normal dirt that leaks out of the container as the water literally drains out clear. I hope that helps! Emma

What is the depth dimension of each disc?

about 1/4" if I remember correctly. They are a fibrous tangle of plastic (?) and not very thick. I was surprised but they seem to work well and did not let the soil flush out when watered. My plants are very happy. These are a great alternative to the packing peanuts or gravel I used to rely on.

Can this be cut to a smaller size?

Yes, you can trip the discs to fit your size of pot. The website has information that might help at www.drain-smart.com.

If it’s used instead of gravel or bark why does in say on the box to place it on top of bark?

Thanks for your question. When a plant doesn’t need the full depth of soil in a large planter gardeners can place bark in the bottom of a large planter to displace thr soil. Drain Smart discs placed on top of thr bark keep the soil from migrating downward into thr bark.
