So I got this as most of my laptops these days seem to have more USB-C then not, so to not fiddle with an adapter I got this console cable. The only thing is it's pinout was a little different from the standard ones I've used, as the RX/TX pins are swapped to my hardware. I could whip up an adapter which is what I'll end up doing, but definitely something to note. Otherwise with my windows machine it came up fine and worked with putty no problems. Overall good tool to have, just verify pinout as always.

The Oikwan model is a good value for an essential item pairing a modern interface and a class-leading chipset. I am pleased to give it my unreserved recommendation.

There is no doubt that this is likely a niche item most people won't ever need. I was actually quite surprised to find it listed on Vine to request. My company happened to recently have a communication closet issue where the room overheated. After bringing most systems back online we had one system (An Infoblox NetMRI) system which failed to come back up. In order to confirm whether or not we could save the device we needed a console cable to plug directly into it. This cable did the trick. We had a bunch of DB9 male to USB A cables on hand but needed DB9 female to USB. This cable did work to get us into the device which was unfortunately unsalvagable. Either way the cable did what it was supposed to. I did forget to snap pictures of it before leaving it with our technicians but can attest that it looks just like the pictures in the listing show and seems to be well made. If you also find yourself using a modern day administrative laptop which has mostly or only USB C ports and need to get into a DB9 serial based device, I would recommend giving this a shot!

I am positive I have a DB9 male port on one side and USB type C on the other yet nothing I plug this cable into works ! Not simply a lack of communication but a complete lack of anything . No power , no comm , nothing ! Another item getting returned . They warn people with "frequently returned item" yet why do they keep selling it ?

This adapter uses an FTDI FT232R chip. As far as I can tell, it's a genuine FTDI part. It worked on Windows and Android (using the Serial USB Terminal app) with no additional drivers required. Just plug in and away you go. The DE-9 connector on this is wired up as DCE. Basically, it acts like it has a built-in crossover cable. This is good if you want to plug it directly into a computer, or a peripheral which has a DTE-pinned connector. If none of this makes sense, I'd brush up on your RS232 knowledge before purchase. Basically, though, the pinout is expected for being a female DE9 plug. Build quality is very good. The cable itself is pretty thick, and the materials feel sturdy. My only concern is the shell on the USB-C connector. It's on the large side, and while I didn't have trouble, you might have clearance issues with some phone cases. I really don't have anything to complain about, here. It works well, and is built nicely. The price is also very reasonable. I'd definitely recommend if you need to work with an old serial device from a modern laptop or phone.

This worked well for my use case of connecting to firewall appliances. However, it did not produce an output for various switches. After adding an in-line null-modem adapter to cross over the transmit and receive pins then it started working fine. Just something to keep in mind before purchase to ensure that this will work for your application.
