Works great with impressive results
This substrate is absolutely great! I’ve had no issues with this brand and have had great results. My only complaint is that they don’t sell larger bags.

Unfortunate change
I have used this companies substrate multiple times with great success. Well, this time was very different, the packaging was not the same, they used to come in bags with filter patches, this time they were vacuumed sealed. They seemed a little more wet, they smelled, and I experienced the worst success rate ever, it was staggering. I don't know what they were thinking, but in my opinion, a major step backwards.

Substrate dries out during winter months. Bags arriving broken.
I purchased 12 of these substrate bags. After success with my first 2 bags (one monotub) during warmer weather, the subsequent 5 attempts during cold weather invariably failed. Moreover, 3 of the bags arrived broken and were therefore contaminated right off the bat. The substrate has a tendency to dry out, particularly in dry Midwestern winters or wherever gas furnaces are used during the winter. Mushrooms are extremely sensitive to moisture and humidity, and when substrate dries out, mycelia quickly stop growing. When going the route of purchasing pasteurized, pre-hydrated substrate, the two options for growers in dry environments then become to either open the monotub and manually hydrate, which is certainly not ideal because it introduces potential contaminants (and defeats the purpose of purchasing relatively expensive pasteurized substrate bags), or to leave it alone, which from my experience in ~35% ambient humidity, failed 5 times. Invariably mycelia stopped growing and mold took over once the substrate dried out. A far better approach would be to make one's own CVG substrate. It's far less expensive and simple. I'm convinced enough from having 5 different monotubs dry out at the same time of year to post these words of warning and advice to students of mycology. Unfortunately, a one-size-fits-all approach to pre-hydrated substrate is doomed to fail in dry environments if the growing conditions are not adapted to ensure that mycelia have what they need to grow.
