The readings are all over the place
This moisture meter is just one notch above from being useless to me. The readings are all over the place and they are inconsistent, even on the same piece of wood! I can read one end of the wood, which was left out exactly the same as the opposite end of it, and they will give me different moisture readings. The other problem is that sometimes it reads that there is no moisture at all, zero percent, on a piece of wood. I may not be an expert on wood and its moisture levels, but I'm pretty sure that zero percent moisture on wood is almost impossible to achieve, nor ideal probably. The meter is easy to read though, and the screen is bright and visible even in the sunlight, which I am happy about. I just wish there was a clear way to calibrate this meter so that I could know that I'm getting accurate readings every time. Until then, I will pass on using it.

Great Meter for Home Use
WHAT: Wood Moisture Meter USER INTERFACE: This device is easy to understand: Turn it on, select the type of wood (wall, masonry, hard or soft wood), and press it on the wood. The read out will tell you how dry the wood is. There is a hold button that will save the current reading until you press it again. SPEED: It reads almost instantly. DEPTH: It says it reads 3/4" into the wood - I have no way to verify this. ACCURACY: It's accurate enough for the home user. Since I'm looking for a leak or looking to verify there is not one, I tested this with a wood cutting board. I submerged the bottom half of my cutting board in water for 10 minutes while keeping the top dry. Then I sat it on a towel and used the meter on the dry side. This meter detected the moisture. I have no way to confirm the accuracy of the percentage of moisture it detected. DURABILITY: For home use, this little meter encased in plastic is fine, but it's not ruggedized and it's not going to take a beating. It comes with storage case. Properly cared for and treated gently, this should last indefinitely. If it will be in storage for a long time, remove the battery just like for other items that run on batteries. OVERALL: If you need a small inexpensive meter to look for a leak with this will do the job.

Non-invasive, easy to use, and seems accurate!
We are thrilled with this tool, and it has been very helpful so far! My husband was very happy that this tool could detect moisture without putting holes into the drywall…and I’m happy about that, too! I kept hearing what I thought was a dripping sound in a wall, and after going up into the attic and finding no signs of moisture whatsoever, my husband was considering opening up the wall to be sure that we didn’t have a problem. This tool saved us from a mess and repair, as it showed us that the wall is indeed dry (which was our suspicion since there was no sign of moisture anywhere). It also correctly detected a great deal of moisture in a small spot of drywall next to one of our showers, which was an area that we’ve had a known problem. This tool is super easy to use and easy to read. I have never used a moisture meter before, so I don’t know how it compares to similar products on the market. But so far we are really happy with it, especially since it doesn’t put holes into the wall. One thing to note is that if you have bullnose corners in your home, the meter will beep and read a high moisture content just at the corner, where the metal sits just underneath the drywall. I thought I had an issue in one spot, but my husband suspected that it was just misreading that area due to the metal framing at the bullnose corner. Right next to the spot it would give a dry reading. I checked literally every other bullnose corner in my house and each one read the same - and I know that we don’t have leaks all over the house. :) So that is one thing to keep in mind when using this meter. Aside from that, it has been very accurate for us!

Works well, battery and bag included
This moisture meter works fairly well. I doubt professionals looking for 1% accuracy will be satisfied by it, but it easily surpasses the cheap pin moisture meters for us hobbyist woodworkers. It has four settings - wall, masonry, hard wood, and soft wood. If you're looking for a leak in your house then the wall and masonry modes will be most useful. For woodworking and firewood the two wood modes will be most helpful. The ranges are reasonable, with hardwood being considered "dry" between 5% and 12%, and softwood being considered dry between 5% and 20%. Depending on your use you may find the other ranges useful, but for understanding whether wood is dry enough to shape into its final form this is sufficient. It reads quickly, and is consistent. The included (cheap) 9v battery is easy to install, and it includes a cloth bag which it slips into easily. The power button isn't a switch, so it's probably using a small amount of power all the time, I expect that occasional users would be well served by disconnecting the battery and turning it around when not in use. The construction is thin plastic, it doesn't have any sort of overmolded protection, it's obviously not water resistant, so I wouldn't suggest it for professional on-site work. Take it to the wood supplier or hardware store, use it in your shop, but don't plan on just tossing it in your tool bag with your other tools or taking it out in damp weather to check on your wood pile and expecting it to last a long time.

From the behaviour I have seen from this device, I have zero faith in the accuracy or the reliability: it’s a dial-a-reading device. I’m going to go back to one with actual probes.
