Life of Fred -- Kidneys

I really like the idea of this book—it uses narrative to teach and also introduces some life skills type information; however, I don’t feel like the technical teaching of math is really present. I see this book more as a supplement rather than curriculum.

To tell you the truth I don't get these readers but my children love them and they read them again and again. My Queen(wife) spent many days diligently researching and praying about readers that might help our younger children. These are an answer to prayer!

We have been doing LOF since my son was in K. He now does 5th-6th grade math, and really enjoys reading these stories! Makes math so much more enjoyable!! Highly recommend this for children who learn best through reading/literature skills..

My kindergartener loves Fred. He's bit of reluctant reader (though he loves to be read to), but he went through these by himself in a course of couple days. The story is interesting (with just about the right amount of quirky thrown in to make him giggle), the text is simple, and there is just something about the Fred series that engages him.

My daughter's assigned homework (3rd grade, public school) is to practice math facts for 15 minutes every evening. Multiplication flash cards get old very quickly and once she mastered her facts, we moved on to this book. Now she looks forward to our evening time together reading Life of Fred. I'm very happy with this purchase and will probably buy the next book in the series when we have finished this one.

I just recently discovered Life of Fred Math and subsequently purchased the Kidneys book for our test trial of this Math series. My 11 year old DD is currently reading, laughing and learning her way through this book with ease. She's enjoying it, and I'm enjoying how hands off it is for me! We will definitely continue with The Life of Fred Math series as we're having great success with it! Thank you, Dr. Schmidt!

We are using this series in conjunction with Systematic Mathematics (I have a review for it, as well). The two together are a huge hit. My daughter enjoys the fun stories surrounding the math. On its own, it might not be enough, depending on the math needs of your child. That's why we added a DVD program. A more math-intuitive child might not need anything else, though. Either way, she loves it, which is enough for us.

The Life of Fred books turned math into an enjoyable subject for my children and has really helped their understanding. I was beginning to lose hope! I use these as a part of a homeschool curriculum. They actually can't wait to do their math!
