Detects lead accurately on items old and new
This lead detector has been incredibly useful and gave me real peace of mind. It’s easy to use, and the instructions are clear enough that even as a first-time user I felt confident (the item turns green when lead is present). I tested several items around the house and actually found a few with elevated lead levels, which allowed me to remove them before my baby could come into contact with them. For anyone with young kids or living in an older home, this is a really valuable tool.

Good to know about lead in vintage pieces
Worked well.

I’m so thankful for this test!
My son tested positive for high lead levels and I never imagined that a wood coffee table I had in my living room would be the culprit. It’s made such a long process of detecting lead easy and quick. You just shine the UV light on the item, so you can see what it looks like before the spray. Then spray and for me, it immediately turned this neon green. I tested everything and nothing else came up positive. It was so easy to and so fast! I will recommend this to everyone who tests positive or anyone who is just curious. I’m so happy that I was able to identify an item that my son is around constantly and eating off of as a source of lead and can remove it while I wait for an inspector to come to verify it is the only item.

If I could give it 0 stars, I would.
I bought this kit because my child recently tested with elevated lead levels, and I was desperate to find the source in our home. I tested everything—walls, toys, dishes, every surface you can imagine. I even focused on a few specific pottery pieces I suspected because they’re known to sometimes contain lead. According to this kit, everything was negative. But I still didn’t have answers, so I hired a professional lead inspector with an actual XRF lead analyzer. Guess what? The very pottery pieces I suspected—and that this kit said were completely safe—were loaded with lead. We’re talking 18 micrograms from a bowl my family ate from. That’s an extremely high level and absolutely something this test should have detected. This kit gave me a completely false sense of security and delayed identifying a major hazard in my home. Do NOT trust the results of this test. It is not worth the risk.

Surprise charge months later after purchase
Purchased to test peeling paint on windows. Arrived timely and clear instructions. Not sure about the accuracy of this test as it seemed to not have any nationally recognized standard. However, a few months later I got a suprise bill of $15.00 from FedEX and a notice from the Department of Homeland Security. Not sure why the notice but the seller should have informed me of this extra cost that would be passed on to me.

Best value for bulk lead tests
This kit is easy to use and comes with everything you need to do lead testing including a battery for the light. The directions are specific and easy to follow. The black light is bright and the reagent glows obviously in the presence of lead. It works instantly and seems to be accurate. Worth the money for the volume of reagent you get. Great for anyone shopping for antiques. It also works great for testing for lead on cast iron pans.

It only reacts to lead… which is key.
I have been eyeballing this test for a while since I started seeing the research. Mind you, I read every piece of study and publication the company put out prior to buying this product. By day I am a lead poisoning inspector for the state, so I was immediately intrigued. And due to the difficulty of a family getting their hands on an XRF machine, and the scarcity of the only approved “accurate” testing swabs, this sounded too good to be true. I just went through my home and tested things known to have no lead, things known to have lead, and things I was unsure about. Only the leaded items became UV reactive, and it is instantaneous. What I did not expect was for the oxidized, microscopic dust to show. That was a very great visual to see not only the main issue, but the problem with leaving a hazard unchecked. I plan to use this as an educational tool in the field for work, and also to check items while thrifting. Highly recommend considering this for your family if you have small children. My ONLY reason for giving 4 stars is due to the amount of reagent you receive. However on that note, when the reliable test swabs are $10-$15 a swab for a single test, the price point is still far above fair. For someone who will use this for work as an educational and visual aid however, more reagent would be lovely. I would recommend this highly to find actual hazards if you don’t have access to an XRF. And even if using an XRF, keep in mind you are seeing results for ALL layers of paint, not just the exposed areas.

Works as described.
Works well for what it is. Please read up on the limitations to ensure this product is what you need. At first nothing I tested was positive for lead. So I thought it wasn’t working and tested it on lead lighting. Which glowed the luminous green from the advertisement. After that I was able to find a few items that contained lead.

Easy and quick
Easy to use and results are immediate. The light alone resulted in us discovering we had a piece of uranium glass 😄. Very helpful product when going through estate pieces and determining what is safe to keep. Had some issues with the spray bottle leaking in transit but the customer service was very quick and very helpful. Issue was resolved quickly and easily.

Good and reliable enough that they can extort you.
This uses methylammonium bromide dissolved in isopropyl alcohol to detect lead. The bromide reacts with lead and ONLY lead to form some compound that flows green under UV light. Downside is if something glows green in the first place you can't test it. Like tumeric. 4/5 for performance. It can't have false positives. But it can be hard to read if what your testing glows under UV light. It also can't be used in liquids. 2/5 for the price. It's expensive for what it is. I feel like I'm being extorted. The feelings worsones by the fact the refill costs more even though it doesn't have more fluid and doesn't include the UV light! (At least at the time of purchase). If I needed this often I would absolutely diy this. But for now, I guess they got my money. You'd have to buy over 5 times in the span of two years. It's just the smallest amount of bromide you can buy costs a lot. But the more you buy the more you save, significantly so I don't know why it's so pricey from these guys. (Edit: as of 2026 the price of this product has gone up while the costs of individual recourses has gone down. For twice the price (including equipment) you can make over 10x the soloution :|. Saw a youtube video. Dude litterally just mixes 0.3 grams of Methylammonium bromide into 30ml of isopropyl using a magnetic mixing thing for 5 mins ) I could be completely wrong because I'm not scientist. I just feel extorted. Would buy again though, the performance and reliability is undiniable. Just don't go crazy with the spray bottle and it'll last a while. Edit 2: I bought some cheaper stuff. Lots more liquid, lots more unreliable. I was absolutely too harsh on the pricing. Still feel extorted but the reliability is there.
