I usually only review products if they are really good or really bad. This Mackie HM-4 is really good. I have a home music project studio, and I bought this Mackie HM-4 for use with my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones and my Tascam US2x2HR audio interface. I did listening comparisons with my headphones plugged straight into the Tascam, and then straight into the Mackie, which was plugged into the Tascam. I was pretty amazed at how much of an improvement the Mackie made in sound quality through my headphones. The improvement was immediately clear. Everything sounds more clear and vibrant. All the frequencies are more prominent, especially the bass - the bass kicks are punchy and deep with some weight behind them. Without the Mackie, those same bass kicks sound flat and deadened. Low bass tone frequencies, like with bass synth sounds in Electronica music, are clear and very present. Midranges are clear, especially with vocals. And high frequencies are crisp but not harsh. And finally, I have not heard any distortion, even at loud volume. I really think these are good to lessen potential for listening fatigue if you are into recording. You don't have to work as hard to objectively listen. For $40 bucks you really can't go wrong with this Mackie HM-4. If you are doing recording or mixing and mastering, this is a must (or any other good headphone amplifier). Even if you just want to chill and listening to your music, these are still great for that, too. Right now I am going through my music collection and just chillin, listening to song I have heard a hundred times before, and enjoying them in a new way. Happy listening!

I'm a record producer and mixing engineer with over 35 years of experience and I've worked and/or collaborated with multiplatinum talent, Grammy winners/nominees and people with Billboard #1 hits over the years. I can say safely this is the best headphone preamp on the market. Mackie is a very well-known brand for their top notch mixing boards, and this meets their standards. The volume knows are very smooth and have a sturdy, almost weighted feel to them. Other headphone amps I've had, the volume knobs or sliders usually felt cheap and would crackle when you changed the volume. NOT this one. The sound quality is absolutely pristine with no noise, no crackle, no hum. I use AKG Q701 Quincy Jones signature series headphones, which sound amazing but run quieter than other headphones I've owned. This preamp has saved the day. It gets so loud that I have to be careful not to turn it up too loud so I don't hurt my ears or damage my headphones, which is exactly what I was looking for. You can listen quietly and it sounds perfect but if you need loudness (due to having quiet headphones, like me, for example), this will absolutely DELIVER. Emphatic 5 stars from me!!

Works great. Make sure you use a stereo cable. A regular instrument cable will not work properly.

Es mi cuarto producto que compro de esta marca, asequible de entrada, pero que me ha dejado excelente sabor de boca, una D.I., los audifonos de estudio MC-100, microfono de condensador EM-91C, y ahora este amplificador de audifonos el cual le da el ponch necesario a audifonos de alta impedancia de hasta 250 ohms a volumen moderado pero para los mios de 120 ohms estoy mas que cubierto a volumen incluso alto sin distorsion, puedes conectar 4 audifonos y tendras las mismas prestaciones ya que tiene alimentacion externa, lo compre con un descuento del 40%, excelente producto, lo recomiendo.

Just what I needed to have a few different headphone runs in my home music room. Nice and small and simple, works great, sounds great, easy to tuck away on my desk. My only complaint is the order of the jacks/dials goes 4,3,2,1 and I wish the first dial was jack #1 and it went in order upwards - just seems like a weird and backwards design!

Excellent for small home studio and bands. Sturdy and quality sound output. The volume knobs feel loose and cheap but does the work pretty well. I use it with a Soundcraft mixer and 50% volume itself is too loud and doesn’t get distorted until you reach 90% volume. Has a Led power indicator which is good but does not have a power on/off switch which could have been a good- but no complaints. I would recommend this product 100%.
