Very good but not outstanding
I’m presently finished with half of this vocabulary book. The activities at the end of each lesson range from poor to good. There should be a comprehensive test at the end of the book. Approximately 95% of the 1400 words are well chosen by the author. Equanimity and Erudite are two of my favorites under E words. Expressing oneself concisely and accurately ultimately should lead to better communication. Unfortunately, the person listening too often has a poor vocabulary which can result in misunderstanding and worse. Take care to use your excellent vocabulary in the appropriate setting.

Grandma’s Vocabulary Builder
I’m 73 and bought this book to learn and reinforce any knowledge I had previously. I can’t wait to begin. I did notice one reviewer point out some pronunciation mistakes. C. Becker should keep the book and use it to help his students learn to spot mistakes. Just an idea. Anyway I love how this book is laid out and hope it can help me stay sharp in my old age.

Great idea but needs editing
I teach local SAT prep courses, and I am considering adding a vocabulary book to my curriculum. This book looked like what I needed and had great reviews, so I purchased a copy to look over. I immediately noticed a mistake. The table of contents has a phonetic spelling beside the word "contents" which indicates it should be pronounced like the adjective "content." That did not concern me too much since the pronunciation of that word is apparently there just for fun. But then as I quickly flipped through the book, I noticed many other pronunciation issues. For example, "introvert" and "extrovert" both had the accent on the wrong syllable. I saw many multi-syllable words that were missing an accent mark altogether. Maybe there are no mistakes in the definitions and word histories, but I certainly don't have time to check them all before I tell my students what book to buy. I'm disappointed that I will not be able to use this book. I need one that I can trust: I can't afford to use my prep time looking for errors and my class time having my students write in corrections.

I am very pleased with the Vocabulary Builder Workbook. The lessons are in categories and you may start with what interests you or cover to cover. The layout entices me to pick it up again and again.

Exceptionally good vocabulary builder
This book is one of the most accessible vocabulary builder books I have encountered. It is better than flashcards as it is organized based on several themes that are easy to learn and master new words. The exercises at the end of each lesson (one per page) help you check and revise what you have learned. A must-have for anyone who wants to improve their vocabulary--from beginner to advanced learners.
