Freehand: Sketching Tricks and Tips Drawn From Art Paperback – 1 Sept. 2013

Full of good ideas and great art. When you turn a page, a picture will appear on RHS with title and brief description, including artists aims, used on LHS. LHS also includes annotated icons to indicate key methods adopted e.g. collage, digital etc.The book is well made and nice to handle.Also see Helen's "Just Add Watercolour" for another 5 star art book.

I got this book to show different ways of drawing and ways to use a sketchbook and found it's very useful indeed. Lots of inspiration, it make you want to start drawing. The quality of paper and print is very good, the only small negative is that it's quite a small size, though this may be a plus for carrying around in your bag.

A nice, arty book with interesting inspirational ideas. I am an illustrator who works with various media. Even though I have not followed any suggestions from this book yet, I`ve enjoyed the colourful, unique pieces of work displayed in this collection.I would say this book is meant for more experienced artists. Doesn`t really teach you how to draw or give any specific tips. It`s more for people who have experimented with various types of pens and inks and are stuck in a creative rut.The book makes a wonderful gift for anyone who is an illustrator, or anyone who appreciates Esty-esque illustrations.

L'autrice propone molti illustratori con stile diversi tra loro e analizza un'illustrazione per ogni artista, spiegando nel dettaglio i media utilizzati (tecniche stilistiche, media digitali o classici). Il testo è semplice ma molto accurato ed è molto ispirante.Alcuni illustratori vengono citati più volte, presentando di essi lavori diversi e quindi tecniche differenti.Lo consiglio a chi ha bisogno di ispirazione e vuole sperimentare nuove tecniche.

Credo che 2 stelle e mezzo sia il voto più consono per questo volume che passa in rassegna varie tecniche e metodologie da applicare, sia per ritovare l'ispirazione che per cercare uno stile.La pecca è, a mio modo di vedere, il frequente ripetersi degli stessi artisti (alcuni opinabili), riutillizati facendo leva su di una diversa caratteristica (tecnica, soggetto, colore, materiale) del disegno.Sebbene credo che, per via dell'inmpostazione, sia unico nel suo genere non ne consiglio l'acquisto.

Tiene muy poco texto y practicamente todo el libro son ejemplos de otros artistas. Esperaba más contenido y más comentarios. Vale para tomar ideas y sugerencias de una sola fuente sin tener que consultar muchos otros libros, pero es todo arte demasiado "moderno", sólo valora la novedad y nada de la "artesania" del artista clásico.

Nachdem ich zuerst das Buch für mich gekauft habe, geht das 2. Exemplar an meine Schwiegertochter. Man kann es immer wieder zur Hand nehmen, es sind soooo viele Anregungen drin!

I'm taking a Line Drawing class at the moment and the instructor recommended this book.I was a little surprised at it- it's very small (even though I knew the dimensions, the fact that it's about the same size as my hand took me by surprise!) but very thick. Inside are lots of CONTEMPORARY drawings, illustrations, and mixed media work by many different artists. I have to admit, most the work isn't exactly my style (I'm drawn to more organic and playful stuff) but the author does a great job of pointing out why she chose to include the work and what the artist did to make the art piece work, via line, composition, shading, colors, etc.For someone who has a basic sense of drawing/illustration, and wants to learn more and get a nudge in the right direction, this is a good resource to have. There's lot of good information in here re: the technical aspects of making a drawing work.But if you are simply looking for eye candy, make sure you love the artists represented in this book. And if you want an instructional book that REALLY gives you the nuts and bolts of sketching, illustration, and line-drawing, this may not be the book to start out with.I'd love to see another book in this series, with different styles of artists represented. Recommended.

This little book is interesting, lots of tips, unusual drawings. It makes me want to draw! I gave it four stars because it is small, almost 7 inches wide, 5 inches high. The vertical drawings suffer because they are too small to read. There is a teardrop shaped detail next to each one, but it doesn't help that much. Also there are a few errors in the text. On one drawing the description refers to lanterns in the sky, candles and snowflakes, none of which appear in the drawing pictured next to the text. Hmmm. These are not deal-breakers for me. I took some drawing classes years ago in school, haven't kept up with it. This book is very inspiring, that is what I was looking for.

This compact little book does a lot to jump start the creative process. It's not just for beginners; there are many excellent reminders about different concepts on which to base a drawing, or any work of art. It explores a variety of media. The illustrations are delightful and very varied, ranging from tightly drawn to wild, abstract to very realistic, etc. I particularly enjoyed the examples combining digital art or photocopies with hand drawing or coloring. This is a wonderful gift for any artist.
