Can you use any wood with this or just the predrilled/cut pieces? My son wants to make his own training knives. Could this be done on this machine?

It is really good with thinner wood and softer wood. My kids have preferred to get 1/4 inch basswood from the local hardwood store, but the jig has difficulty cutting though anything harder. CoolTools also creates a stronger version called UniMat that can handle harder materials...this is designed as the “kid version” and whereas it is very flexible, it is restricted to thinner pieces and softer woods.

does this come with wood?

I don't think it did. But even if it did it was one or two pieces. You will need to buy more wood for sure.

does it come with any plans and materials?

Yes. It comes with plans for some beginner projects to try (good for age 8) as well as more advanced projects that require lots of parts (14+). It also has a few pieces of wood to try out the tools, but you are going to need more wood to finish the projects.

Where can I get more blades for the saw?

You can either order them on Amazon, or send an email to the maker of the company. It is posted on Amazon as “The Cool Tool saw blades”. It comes as a set of 10.
