Really disappointed in Black and Decker this time
I expected more from B&D on this. I have one of their portable room air conditioners, that really isn't all that portable as it must be connected to a window vent, but man that thing will freeze you out of the room it's in. I had high hopes for this little one, even knowing it would work better being vented out. I had a window for that. I don't know if I had one with a defective fan or what, but when sitting right in front of it you could feel almost no cool air. And I'm talking knees touching the front of the air conditioner. It was blowing some cool air but only a few inches out. We even had the heat exhaust tubes out a window directly behind it, all openings to the window sealed up. No problem with hot air from the exhaust in the room, and there WAS hot air exchanging, so I assume the condenser part was working ok, just didn't have a strong enough fan or something. Decided not to try another given other reviews. Am returning.

Works great, very cold
Works great. No thermostat to adjust but will stop cooling at 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Only draws 225 watts while in high cool mode, 10 watts on high fan. I vented it outside using a a small sheet of styrofoam and some spray foam through an open window. Cardboard would work too. It will cool whatever’s in front of it by removing heat from the front and expelling it to the rear so If you don’t vent it it will not cool the room just whatever is in front of it. Smallest btu unit I could find that wasn’t $600+.

Portable AC unit.
I love, black and decker products, and I love the fact that you did not need a window to vent this product, but it just did not cool an extremely small room. The size room that I have is even smaller than what is stated on the item description. I bought this item specifically because it did not need to vent, and the fact that it was portable, it was small enough to fit into a very small room. But with living in Florida, the room stayed extremely hot, even with this portable AC unit being turned on the highest setting. Thank you

Literal cold air fan, not room air conditioner
To clarify I am reviewing the model number BP01PT "3 in 1 mini portable air conditioner". It's the one in a weird champaign color. I was looking for a portable air conditioner for a very specific use case. I needed something that would blow cold air in a very small area while not necessarily needing to vent the hot air out a window. Alas, these types of devices do exist, and why I wanted one. Think of a garage space where you need to keep the door open to vent fumes, but you can't have any conventional window / mini split air conditioner running. This type of device is perfect for those scenarios, keeping a very specific small area (basically person) cool. You could also brute force a typical portable air conditioner to do the same thing I suppose, but then you're running a lot of extra electricity for that. They're also a lot bigger than this unit. I was also looking for a device like this that could run on a portable battery as well - specifically a camping battery that is readily available nowadays. Unfortunately, the results of my testing equipment show wattage usage falls outside the range of smaller batteries and needs a mid-size one to function. So, with the unit on cold mode (high or low), it runs on about 310 watts continuous. It also has a peak 2 second starting requirement of 1217 watts. These two numbers eliminate a lot of "entry" level camping batteries that can do 600 watts continuous, but only peak at 1200. Typically, those units have sensitive electronics that will immediately shut down the battery if it's even 5 watts over the max draw - which is understandable. Most batteries should handle the 310 watts continuous, but you're going to need the peak / surge wattage to be above 1217 (ideally 1300 or better). This device does not magically pass the laws of thermodynamics. It will not cool a room unless you specifically vent the hot air outside via the included hoses. But even then, this was never designed to cool a room in the first place. Think of it as a very specific fan that guarantees cold and dry air up to 6 feet in front of it. It may also work as a tent air conditioner, but keep in mind its rated for 95F max and only has 1000BTU of cooling power. Since it runs at 310 watts, we know that the EER rating is a pathetic 3.22 (1000 / 310) This device suits my needs perfectly for what I'm trying to achieve. But it's a very narrow use case, and I know that. If you're looking to do something similar, I would say "go for it". But chances are, there's probably better solutions if you have the space or know how to get there. The lone saving grace for this unit in a general sense, is that for cooling literally one single person in a room, 310 watts isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things. Even the most efficient small room window air conditioner runs at 550 watts, and they require (you guessed it) a window to work. You also can't move them around, and this one is portable.

Ok as a personal unit
This works ok as a personal unit. However the amount of hot air that comes out of it makes the remaining of the room extremely hot. Also, the wattage is unclear. The description says 300w however it takes 1200w to start. The AC low mode uses about 181w and hi toggled between 280w and 300w. So it won’t run longer than about 3 hours on your best power station. We wanted it as a way to stay cool during power outtages but this doesn’t seem ideal. You could direct the hot air through a window and that might help.

Faulty unit
The unit would not power up when plugged in. I called Black and Decker customer service and after troubleshooting steps they determined it is a faulty unit and said I should return it to the retailer. Also there’s not a btu rating anywhere on this listing. I asked Amazon AI what the Btu rating was for this item and it said 5,000. That is misinformation. The product information label on the outside of the unit states that it’s rated at 1,000.

Perfect for exercising at home in one spot.
This air conditioner can't defy the first law of thermodynamics, nor be quieter than others of its size. Once you accept this, then it does exactly what it promises to do, for the amount that it costs: It cools the air directly around you within a three-foot radius or so, for the duration that you're situated there, without the hassle of having to place it near a window and sealing off the opening around the exhaust. For my purposes, it's the one thing that I've found to keep me sane while I work out on my elliptical machine this summer. For that one hour, I just want cold air blasting on me, I don't care that the rest of the room is heating up, and I'm listening to music on my noise-canceling headphones.
