could a man with large hands work this puppet?

I'm a 5' 10" tall man with large hands (I guess? 7" long from palm to tip of my middle finger) and I can work it fine. You might have an issue if you try to use the arm (the one without the mushroom). I put my my thumb in the bottom jaw and my index, middle, and ring finger in the upper jaw, then put my pinkie in the arm. This works but you might feel a little bit of a strain working it (but fortunately you can move the arm in a position that it isn't too bad). Doing this, though, will likely prevent you from moving the eyes. I've been able to move the eyes by bumping them with my knuckles but it's a 50/50 shot that I can get my fingers back where they need to be in the middle of a story. I hope that helps!

What is the diameter of the bottom opening?

It is not circular but like a track in that the long dimension is 3.5 inches and the short diameter is 3 inches - approximately. However, once you slip your hand inside the space is bigger. If you fold your thumb in over you palm I can easily get my adult male sized hand into the puppet to move the mouth and tree branches.
