Relive the Magic
I played each of the main Dragon Quest games since the release of the original Dragon Warrior, and I've enjoyed each one. I was curious to try this one given the overall refresh of gameplay, graphics, and story.Overall I'm impressed.Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake provides an opportunity to revisit the iconic Dragon Quest III but in a modern and refreshing manner. The gameplay is smooth and fun, yet retains the subtle quirkiness of the original, such as character movements. The game is smooth, but not overly so, and therefore is reminiscent of an old school RPG.I'm only a couple hours in, but this is a great game which I look forward to playing through to completion.Besides the iconic nature of the Dragon Quest series and the general refresh, there are a number of great features.First is the frequent autosave - this allows you to play the game in smaller increments if desired, without seeking out a designated save point. Second, the customization at the beginning is also nice - this allows you to select among three difficulty levels, the most difficult, Draconian feels reminiscent of the difficulty of old school RPGs which is a great touch and offers a fresh challenge for those revisiting Dragon Quest III. Even better, this may be changed at any point throughout the adventure. Lastly, I really like the bite-sized tutorials sprinkled throughout the adventure. These are instructive, serve as useful reminders, and are seamlessly integrated within the main quest.Overall Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a nostalgic experience for existing fans of the franchise, but is also a great jumping on point for those new to the series. It incorporates fresh features while remaining true to the original.Highly recommended.

Dragon Quest III Remake
I wasn't sure if I would like this remake of a game when I first heard that Square Enix was remaking it with the modern 2D graphics like Octopath, but I gave it a try. I first played the game when it was released on the NES over 30 years ago and it was one of my favorite RPGs back then. I think the remake was very well done with plenty of improvements while staying faithful to the original version. The game still holds a challenge, but these improvements make the game easier to play for everyone. Some things I didn't like about it were the inability to switch music from rearranged to original music, the censorship, the renaming of certain towns and characters, and parts of the game are too easy. I also dislike all the items and seeds scattered throughout the world, making it an endless quest picking them up, only to make the game too easy. Of course this is optional. Overall, I enjoyed the remake very much, and I look forward to picking up the Dragon Quest I& II collection soon!

Holy smokes! This is worth the $60!
I picked up a Nintendo Switch Lite back in 2020, when this was announced. I had no idea it'd take 4 years, but it was worth the wait, and the wait wasn't just for a new coat of paint. Sure, the graphics were greatly overhauled, and are wonderful. I'm only 4-5 hours in, and I can tell there's a lot going on in addition.Quality of Life Adjustments:* Making a character seems way easier than I recall. I remember creating a bunch of characters in hopes to get the stats and personality I want. Well, now you can just back out almost all the way during the process without losing the name and completely restarting.* Three challenge modes accommodate various playstyles. I'm playing through on Drakky Quest mode, as I've seen the content before, and I just want to enjoy (there's no real challenge to it.) Those who really want a challenge can choose Draconian Quest mode. Of course, there's the default Dragon Quest mode that most will likely choose.* Inns now allow you to rest for a while to change the time of day.* You can commit anything you've heard to memory to serve as a journal-like function, from what I can tell.* I was quite pleased that I could turn off the voice acting and lower the sound effects and music, while enhancing the ambient sounds.Encouraging Exploration* In addition to the pots and barrels, the developers have put treasures about the map. As of now, I only know about what I see sparkling in the distance. I suspect that a thief should be able to sniff out other items in the future.* If you see a tree that looks different than the surrounding trees, go check it out. It'll often bring you to a secluded area where you may find a treasure, or an NPC with a hint of sorts. This is absolutely the definitive version of the game.
