Great album
I've been aware of Mandy Moore since I first hunted down the song Cry from the film 'A Walk To Remember'. I was very excited about the album Coverage and liked Wild Hope -- even if it wasn't as well done as the former. Amanda Leigh offers a continuation of both these albums sound with a more mature edge: that breezy, blusey, folkish rock -- a modern 70's esque sound. I personally loved it and after a few listens I began to pick out what are some very strong songs; what's nice about this album is that it actually sounds like an 'album'; with the songs flowing from one to the other without jarring. There's a wholistic vibe to it as an artistic work. Merrimack River -- A soothing, blues type slow number. It's a nice way to begin the album; indicating the general flavour of music that follows. 7/10 Fern Dell -- A catchy, guitar song with beautifully atmospheric music. It also builds up to a fantastic finish. 10/10 I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week -- This is the first single. I'm not sure about that choice, but out of all of the songs on this album I can see why it was chosen, it seems slighty more 'mainstream' and middle of the road than the others. Actually it's probably something that wouldn't have been out of place on Wild Hope. 8/10 Pocket Philosopher -- A sunny, and upbeat track. This song took a while to grown on me, but grown on me it did! Ironically it was the verses that had me first; indeed I like them more than the chorus. I have a feeling this one will be utterly underrated. 10/10 Song About Home -- Slow and steady. That basically sums up this number -- not my favourite track; probably one that'll need more listening to. 7/10 Everblue -- One of my favourite songs on the album. Everblue is a slow song, along the lines of a ballard. Mandy's voice sounds fantastic on it, as does the accompaniment and I like the melancholy tone to it. 10/10 Love to Love Me Back -- I like this song very much. It's kind of middle of road, a slower fare than I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week but has nice lyrics and tempo. 8/10 Indian Summer -- A ballard along the lines of Mona Lisa's and Madhatters that has awesome music that swells beautifully. A song expressing a past event. I wish it had been longer. 10/10 Nothing Everything -- My favourite song on the album. Another "catchy" one but in a far less obvious way than Fern Dell; the accompaning music and background vocals adds tremendously to the piece. It tends to get stuck in my head (in a good way!). It has a slightly melancholy tinge to it without being depressing. 10/10 Bug -- I love this song! I also wish it had been longer. It's very folky with the tinkling guitar and intimate acoustic feel; it also serves as a lovely way to close a very strong offering from Moore. 10/10 Highly recommended.

Mandy has taken pop to a much more adult and classy level
Mandy Moore came into the music business as your conventional pop-princess, and has slowly transformed with each album. The first sign of a transformation came with her 2001 eponymous album, which envoked a Middle-Eastern R&B sound, followed by her album Coverage which contained covers of legendary songs such as Moonshadow & Mona Lisa's & Mad Hatters. Coverage was often viewed as Mandy's emancipation album. Three years after Coverage came Wild Hope, the most mature of Moore's albums yet, containing a Country/ Folk contemporary sound where Mandy finally showed the world what a talented writer she is with thought provoking lyrics and haunting melodies. And now comes Amanda Leigh, the most adult form of Mandy's albums, this album contains lyrics that bare similarity to those of Tom Wait's & Tori Amos and the music of Joni Mitchell and Paul McCartney. The unwavering maturity in this album will make it one of the best albums of 2009, particularly as Mandy is only 25 years of age and was able to create such an inspiring album. 1. Merrimack River - This album opens with a soothing chillout Bluegrass guitar drive. A song that would be good for a relaxing day in the summer sun. 2. Fern Dell - Probably the dark horse track on this album. A haunting folk guitar carries this amazing single worthy track, the lyrics seem to speak of a woman regretting a relationship. The lyrics are written in a way that Tori Amos may write "Follow the kicks and punches with the rest". When listening to this, teenagers and young adults may think of the theme tune for the classic TV show, The Herbs. 3. I Could Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week - the toe-tapping, hand-clapping lead single. This song resurrects Mandy's sassy side for this catchy kiss-off but she still keeps the albums plucky acoustic sound. Fun musical vengeance at it's classiest. 4. Pocket Philosopher - A tinkly toy piano carries this sweet ditty. It contains a sing-a-long sound that anyone can find joy in as it seems to speak of the joys of spring time. 5. Song About Home - A cute song that reminds me of old-time movies (Circa Wizard Of Oz), that uses some very soothing vocal harmonies. 6. Everblue - A ground breaking bass drum seems to create an almost African sound for this gorgeous, very unconventional ballad. 7. Merrimack River (Reprise)- Another old time movie reminiscent, but more orchestral. 8. Love To Love Me Back - Another potential single, a soft-rock acoustic sound. Another sun-touched song where Mandy expresses her soprano harmonies 9. Indian Summer - A grand piano leads this amazing mid-tempo ballad, with lyrics referring to an evasive and changing lover but Mandy remaining the same 10. Nothing Everything - A distorted guitar leads this uptempo country-tinged number, featuring Mike Viola on male vocals. 11. Bug - A gorgeous and catchy bluesy/folk ballad closes this masterpiece of an album, containing a lulling fiddle solo halfway through the song. The only criticism I have is that Bug is not nearly as long as it should be. Mandy has created an album that will be labelled as one of the classiest pop albums of all time. Mandy has found her comfort zone in folksy acoustic rock music, keep it up.

...it picks up right where wild hope left off but also has the Coverage sound (no karaoke covers-it's all new material.) The songs are all very well sung, with Mike Viola providing vocals that blend very well with Moore's. 1. Merrimack River-a slow song that starts off the album but not at all a downer song-"Don't say you're not amazed when I know you are." Good song 8/10 2. Fern Dell-This is what a pop song should sound like-Moore sounds great, not slow, not too fast- 10/10 3. I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week-I am so divided over this song, it's a good pop song-way better than Kelly Clarkson's 'My Life Would Suck Without You' and when I hear it before Pocket Philospher I think it fits in well with the whole album, but Pocket Philosopher is way better, and if you hear 'Fern Dell' before this it just doesn't fit quite right, maybe because its so upbeat and Fern Dell is slightly on the dark side. I don't know where the song fits (almost sounds like a left over from wild hope's pop songs and those were mostly as bland as this) and I'm very divided over it being released as the main single since it sounds like filler at best...I hate to do this but I Could Live Without this Song on this album any day of the week. 5/10 4. Pocket Philospher-Upbeat song with Viola perfectly backing up Moore. "Be whoever you want to be..." "My heart felt heavy..." " "Let's play a song, or two, or three or four" This song is so cute and has so many highlights in it alone! 10/10 5. Song About Home-This is THE Joni Mitchell song on the album-and that's a good thing, I liked Moore's cover of JM's song 'Help Me' on Coverage and this song perfectly compliments that cover.10/10 6.Everblue-Everblue what am I to rate you? Fits well on the album and sounds really good though its not one of the upbeat pop songs on the album but its a highlight among the slower ones. Viola compliments her well during her bridge/verse/chorus on the second half of the song. 9/10 7. Merrimack Reprise-Sounds like musicbox music. 7/10 8. Love to Love Me Back-One of the best songs on the album if not the best song on the entire album, surpasses Mandy's best on Wild Hope "Nothing That You Are" and thats a very, very good thing-should have been the single. 10/10 9. Indian Summer-70s flashback-good song, I want to say it sounds like an Elton John from the time, think 'Mona Lisa' off of Coverage, but better still.9/10 10.Nothing Everything-Song has a good message "If you can do this for me you can do this for yourself" An upbeat pop song which could also be a single. 9/10 11.Bug-Another very early 70s pop sounding song,folk-pop and a nice way to end the album and leave you wanting more. 9/10 Overall an A minus or 9 out of 10 stars. And please Mandy don't let it be another two years for Moore music. (Pardon the pun but it can't be helped.)

Anspieltipps: Fern dell, I could break your heart any day of the week, Indian summer, Merrimack river, Bug
