In July 1989, after having played only one concert together under the name of Iona, David Fitzgerald and David Bainbridge recorded a four-track instrumental demo-tape at the studio of friend Neil Costello with the aim of gaining some record company interest in their newly formed project. A month later, after performing a short set on the fringe at the Greenbelt Festival (their second ever gig, and the first with Joanne), Iona were offered a record deal with World Records. Their debut album - featuring songs such as 'Turning the Tide' - is permeated with the enthusiasm of their discovery of the rich stream of their Celtic Christian heritage and also with the haunting, timeless atmosphere of the islands of Iona and Lindisfarne, to which their pilgrimage took them.

A good taster
Like the previous reviewer I agree 30mins is a bit short but what you do get is an insight to how this superb band was created, their beliefs and some fantastic pieces of music in their earliest live incarnation.

I was a bit disappointed with this - not because the film is short
First off all, let me express that I am a fan of Iona's music. :-)However, I was a bit disappointed with this - not because the film is short, but because of the lack of any real insight into how the album was made. I was expecting a more 'Classic Albums' approach; in the studio, talking about the creative process, stories/inspiration behind the music, listening to tracks in isolation, studio techniques, etc. Still, some interesting early live footage, although there should have been more of that as well. This is one for completists and hard-core fans.

Fantastic Christian Band
I have a large collection of Christian Praise music recorded by US artists which are all beginning to sound alike. CD's by this Celtic group (I now own three of their CD's) are a welcome addition to my collection. I love their sound (that includes flutes, Irish whistles, etc.). I also like the down-loadable wallpaper, commentaries, and other cool stuff you can find on their website.

Can't go wrong with Iona.
I love Iona (the band). This album isn't nearly as good as their later stuff, but it's still got some awesome music on it.

Iona - Impressive Debut
Iona made their debut on to the world stage with this their first album in 1990. The original band was a trio comprised of Dave Bainbridge, Joanna Hogg, and Dave Fitzgerald. The three were augmented on this album by about a half dozen session players, one of whom, Troy Donnockley would eventually become a member of the band as well. The album contains several tracks that are still a part of the band's live show 20 years later including the killer instrumental "Flight Of The Wild Goose". Iona albums tend to have some filler to go along with the meat, but this one seems to be pretty lean all the way through. Hogg's vocals are pristine and Bainbridge's guitar soars on the rocking stuff like "Trilogy" and caress on the acoustic selections like "Beijing". I really like this album a lot and would rank it right near the top of the Iona catalogue.
