Went back to the "old school" way of shaving and much happier
I purchased this as I was tired of expensive, cheaply made, multi-blade razors that overall, gave a lousy shave. After decades of using these cheap things, I went back to what I learned on in my youth, a double edge safety razor. After a little retraining (yes, you have to invest some time in learning) to use something that is heavier and more substantial, I'll never go back to the cheap, plastic whores that were ripping me for money just to get a shave for a razor that might last 10 shaves at most. The Henson is awesome. It's heavier, yes, but solid made, feels good in the hand and gives the best and easiest shave that I have missed for DECADES. It didn't take long to remember what a safety razor felt like and after about a week, I felt very comfortable with it. The Henson is solid, well made and I had little issue paying more for a razor that I'm sure, will last me for the rest of my lifetime. If you count up ALL the plastic razors I've used over the years, the cost of the Henson is really nothing at all. After a little relearning how to hold and use this, I get a great, close shave. But more than this, IT DOES NOT CLOG UP. Just a little water over the Henson and it is clear of any stubble. With the cheap, plastic razors, I had to use an old toothbrush to clear out the stubble every minute to get a shave that felt good. This razor just washes out cleanly in the sink or shower, never clogs and makes it a pleasure to use. Changing blades is simplicity and never a problem. I purchased a sample pack of blades on Amazon that has 16 different samples that will easily last me for quite a while and those were only about $16. That's not a bad price and the frustration and elimination of clearing a razor that is clogged all the time is well with it. Of course, everyone has their preferences, but I've returned to the "old school" way and am much happier doing so.

Well, this was entirely unexpected.
I saw this product in a YouTube ad, and ignored it -- since I hadn't shaved in probably 15 years. But a few things from that ad spot stuck with me: the tight engineering tolerances, and safety, the cleanliness, the simplicity. Fast forward a few months, and I'm at the DMV, getting a new picture for my license. The very nice gentleman at the DMV shows me my picture, side-by-side with the previous one. I say, "Wow, I look older." -- his reply is, "Well, let me tell you, I've been doing this a long time, and nobody ever looks younger." It's not that I'm afraid of aging, but it'd also been a long time since I'd seen my face. It's been so long that my wife has never seen my face. My son has never seen my face. Last night, when I was laying in bed thinking about all this, I decided to order the Henson Shaving Razor. It came with free overnight delivery -- cool! The packaging is nothing fancy - a simple box, with the razor inside and a small box of 5 double edge razor blades. As soon as I picked up the razor, I was impressed. It is lightweight, it is striking -- unlike any other razor. It feels substantial, but comfortable to hold, because of its weight. It is easy and obvious to assemble. And using it it obvious as well (to me, anyway). I wet my face down and began using it -- slowly, because I have a lot of hair. By the time I was done, I was more than a little shocked. I wound up changing that first blade, because I put it through its paces. But the "closeness" of the shave that I achieved is absolutely insane. I can rub anywhere on my face with the back of my hand, in any direction, and not feel stubble. I was in the military, a lifetime ago, and I never got a shave this close. I love that this razor is made in Canada, that it's made with quality, and that those claims I heard in the ad were NOT just claims -- it's all true. The tolerances of this razor are a little ridiculous. The Henson razor holds that blade exactly where it needs to be, every time. The blade cannot shift forward or back, so it will ALWAYS deliver a perfectly consistent shave, no matter which side is being used. I am really, truly blown away by this product. And I'm thrilled that it'll last me a lifetime. Thank you, Henson!

Best Shaving Experience of my Life
Recently purchased this razor. I expected it to be fairly good, based on all the excellent reviews, though I didn't quite buy into all the claims made in the advertisements. I should also note that I did not use the RK blades that come with the AL13, instead using Feather brand blades. I have only ever used a safety razor a handful of times in my life, giving up on them because of the nicks, irritation, and cuts. Instead, I've used Dollar Shave Club's "Executive" for the last 10 years and Gillette Fusion before that. I currently use a badger hair shave brush and Clubman Pinaud Classic Barber Shave Cream. After the first shave, I can tell you this: All of the hype is real! There was NO irritation, no drag, just a perfect shave that required little to no pressure. The expected learning curve was non-existent. The AL13 produced the smoothest and most comfortable shave I've ever experienced in my life. I cannot recommend this razor enough! After one shave, I cancelled my Dollar Shave Club subscription, it is that good.

Seriously Bad*ss
Coming from using DSC and Harry's cartridge razors for the last decade. I never really had any crazy complaints. Until I started paying attention to razor burn on my neck, that I believed was acne. I saw an AD on these and the algorithm kept me in the loop until I finally lost the battle. I will admit father of 3, blue collar job and an old school land cruiser addiction. Make 80$ hard to have laying around. But believe me when I tell you, if you haven't wet shaved with a "quality" safety razor. You have no idea what you're missing. What was once routine every two days, and was just Meh. Now I look forward to shaving every morning with a level of detail and is super satisfying. The shaver is super primitive, functional, robust but genius. No parts to break. No gimmicks to screw up. Just unscrew, place the blade in and cinch it down. I'm careless when I shave generally with its on the face, neck or the unmentionables. I've yet to have a scare, razor burn or a cut. And I've tried to be as dumb as I can to know this razors limits. It clears out quickly and easily with a rinse. No thumbing the channel or blade. It's seriously sharp (compared to the plastic second cousins down the road with every other store bought razor) this also comes down to the blades you buy. A lot of lads mentioned the blades Henson supplies are super mild. I went with the tip option in Amazon the platinum Astra blades, and they are fantastic. Buy yourself a sampler kit of blades to know what works best for you. The best part is this razor will pay for itself very quickly. 100 Blades for my shaving amount will last me roughly 18 months for 10$. Before I was spending about 30$ a month on blades and a few bucks on shaving cream. Get yourself a wet shave soap, brush and some healing balm and you're off to a fantastic shave. Since getting mine I've told literally everyone and bought 4 more as gifts. I mean it when I say, it's the best self care purchase anyone (man or woman) can make to save some money in the long run and actually enjoy shaving moving forward.

Great razor, just very overpriced
This razor has fundamentally changed how I shave. Razor blades are infinitely cheaper than cartridges, and I generally can get a shave without razor burn, which never used to be possible before. It’s certainly a bit of a longer process though, and it takes more practice than a normal razor, but it’s worth it. However, the price feels very steep. What you’re getting is 5 razor blades (like $0.50 to $1 in value), and the three aluminum pieces of metal that make up this razor. I get it probably is well machined or whatever but it just doesn’t feel worth it.

Its worth it. You’re worth it.
The hype around this razor legitimate. The razor is very mild, combined with an aggressive blade it provides a fantastic shave with little to no irritation. The Henson with a Feather blade is the most comfortable shave Ive ever had. Before purchasing this my go to was a vintage Fatboy; the Hensons light weight encourages one to push….resist the urge and shave like its typical safety razor or you will be wearing tiny pieces tissue paper and that Alum bar will really wake you up. The Henson for me likes more aggressive blades (your milage may vary), I cant do Feather in the Fatboy the aggressive combination results in a plasma donation for me, If a friend hadn’t suggested both the Henson and Feather I never would have tried. With the Henson the sharper more aggressive Feather gives less drag, fewer passes, less irritation and no razor burn, I’ve always understood the concept but this is the first time I’ve experienced it. The razor burn that has been almost permeant on the sides of neck has almost entirely cleared for first time in almost 30 years. My hats off to Henson on design and execution of a fantastic razor. The RK blades that come with it are not impressive. Bic CP works well with both the Henson and fatboy for me…..but only get 7ish shaves out of a blade, Feather 8-10.

Unexpected Quality and Comfort
I’m no stranger to the old school safety razors, I switched over a decade ago to quit paying for high priced blades. I am my barber’s worst nightmare when I go for a shave, because I have really coarse and thick facial hair and relatively thin skin, meaning nicks and cuts are a normal part of my life. I’ve been shaving my face regularly for over 35 years and have the process down after trying every gimmick available. After visiting a he Henson website, I was unsure if I should order the AL13 or the AL13M, I opted for the 13 because the M wasn’t available through Amazon and I wanted the fast shipping. I was way past due for a shave and the Henson did an excellent job, the cut was easy, it didn’t clog up, it rinsed really well, and most importantly NO NICKS OR CUTS! The razor is lighter than I expected and the handle was shorter than I’m used to, but that worked out to be an advantage as it was easier to position the razor at the proper angle while shaving. Excellent razor and I highly recommend it.

Excellent head shaver
I’ve been wet shaving for 15 years, I always use mild razors for head shaves and this one is really smooth with an astra blade. It’s a little expensive for being an aluminum razor which is why it gets 4 stars but the tolerance is nice and tight with perfectly equal blade gap right from the start without having to adjust. I shaved my fiancé’s legs with it too and I’d say it’s perfect for that application, she was impressed and wants to keep it for herself.

Warning: mild not suitable for everyone
If you have hair strand follicles that are thick and stiff this would not give you a clean shave even if you paired it with the sharpest blades available like feather brand blades. I haven't tried the medium and aggressive version but might eventually as I liked the feel of the product, just a pity the shave was not what I wanted.

Impresionante

Very, very good!
This is an excellent safety razor, by bending the blade it is very easy to use compared to other similar razors I have used. The risk of cuts and abrasions is greatly reduced. My only issue, a small one, is the aluminum it’s made of. It feels a bit too light, I would have preferred steel if that was an option.

The perfect razor. Period.
As a long-time cartridge user (Fusion 5-blade swivel, tilt) I researched a lot before transitioning to a DE razor. If you value design and craftsmanship then the Henson is miles above the rest. All aluminum construction with no plastic in sight. The finish is anodized aluminum which increases hardness and is long lasting. No chance of flaking. The handle is lightweight and knurled for a sharp grip. There is no rubber coating so the handle gives a tactile control. The head is precision machined an fits the blades tightly. The blades are easy to change in seconds. It takes standard sized blades so you can use your existing blades, use the included blades (which are not too bad) or get blades wherever you travel. Of course you can try different blades to find the perfect shave for you. The innovative design is different than all other razors because there is a very specific angle machined into the head which is the perfect angle to the blade. You can practice without a blade at first but you will get the hang of it soon enough. The razor is easy to maneuver and the head size gives good visibility. The channel below the blade makes rinsing easy and there is no clogging like the multi-blades do often. The bottom of the handle is rounded so its not designed to stand upright whick can damage the razor is it falls over which is also dangerous. I am still experimenting with different creams and blades but so far the Henson is giving me a great close shave right out of the box. The packaging is recyclable cardstock with the instructions printed on the box to reduce paper. The blades are recyclable and this razor will last decades, so its all good for the environment. If you don't want to give money to large corporations who get their stuff made overseas then this purchase will make you feel good. Its designed, manufactured and packaged in Canada by guys who own an aerospace machine shop. It more expensive but you can feel the value and it will save me hundreds of dollars over the years. A small price to pay for something you use everyday.
