No cord; it's connected to electrical source in the ceiling. It is made so you could cord it. No remote comes with this model.

Does it have to be mounted to a joist to prevent damage to ceiling or wobble from fan?

You must mount the fan to a solid base. You cannot just screw it into the ceiling drywall.

Can a shorter downrod be used?
