A Tennis Legend..
I have many fond memories of the agonizing (and ultimately fruitless) hours I spent willing Ivan Lendl to win Wimbledon in the 80's. I was utterly entranced by him as a tennis player and fascinated by the mental and physical fortitude of a man who, but for the lack of this one elusive title, seemed infallible and indestructible. I now find myself some 30 years on, willing Andy Murray on to victory, wondering how much longer my nerves will hold out and yet full of the same respect and admiration for many of the same qualities that once drew me to Lendl. When Andy Murray announced that he was hiring Ivan Lendl as a coach it was like all my tennis birthdays had come at once! I could instantly see why and how it could/should work and couldn't wait for the results. Like so many of us, I wasn't disappointed. Whilst what makes Murray 'tick' is relatively well-documented, Lendl has remained something of an enigma throughout his career and this book is a must for anyone wanting to understand a little bit more about the 'iron' man. Lendl is portrayed as a man of many complexities, with an unparalleled work ethic and an unrelenting, obsessive competitiveness that spills over into many aspects of his life. The stories of his childhood in Czechoslovakia, subsequent battles with the state in the pursuit of his goals and his eventual decision to defect to the USA, make fascinating reading as do the revelations relating to his 'unique' sense of humour (not always appreciated by his peers..). Well worth a read for any tennis fan.

Excellent Read
Thoroughly interesting book. It was really good to learn about Ivan Lendl as a person, his past history and present life. He is such strong character but I think that comes from his background. Understanding the relationship between him and Andy Murray and how they both tick.

Lendl was the man
The similarities between Lendl and Murray are a bit closer than first look. Lendl made Murray a winner of grand slam. Think murray would have handled the Australian open final better with the guidance. Also good account of Lendls career. Good read.
