They are not traditional workbooks with a set of directions that a child uses to practice a skill. Instead, they provide a creative platform and gentle guidance for documenting a study on a particular topic or topics. So you collect a few books, documentaries, activities, etc. related to a topic and use these pages to record what you are learning. We loved using this book with our nature guides and Bear Grylls’s how Survival School for my seven year old. Bear Grylls books are another great companion with this book. The pages give you topics to research and write about (first aid, medicinal plants, shelters, etc.) but sometimes we just use them to record what we are interested in, instead. For example, we don’t hunt so the page on hunting was used for more animal observations. I love the creativity and flexibility of these journals and my son loved the topic of this one! Review: Awesome - This book is so cool my little guy is 8 his daddy is helping him with this book recently they researched poisonous plants together at the library with this book. Older boys would definetly love doing this on their own. You have everything in here from wild life to plants, survival skills like fire and water and shelter. How to skills like knots, orienteering first side survival bag and different survival scenarios very cool book and I love that my husband and son can do this together my girls could certainly join in easily since thinking tree journals are for family use I can make copies for the children in my home!

Everyone Should Learn Survival Skills!
The Thinking Tree has come out with another winner! What a great book to learn and record your outdoor survival skills including flora and fauna...what's edible, what's poisonous, etc.; how to build fires, tie knots, and make shelter; first aid and orienteering; and how to find and purify water. The book also has some scenarios to practice your survival skills. My son and I are going to take my 10 and 14-year old grandsons and these journals to the woods on a friend's property and have "Survival School!" These are skills everyone should know, especially those who travel, camp, hike, or otherwise are around wilderness areas! Do some research using books, videos, or websites and fill out the journal pages then take them out and practice what you've learned. They have even included survival scenarios!

A good book for those who have children interested in survival skills.
This is a book that gives ideas for the user to research for their own area. different plants & animals to see if their dangerous or beneficial in a survival setting. It also has places for writing notes on what you've learned about in First Aid, Fire, Knot Tying, & Shelter.

A wonderful Adventure
This has been one of my son’s favorite learning books. He takes it out side and uses it as his field guide of sorts. He takes notes, draws pictures, and researches animals, plants, and more. It has even been a book that has been used on camping trips. It’s pretty much complete and he is requesting another one. Thank you Fun Schooling for making a difference in our homeschooling life!

Excellent tool!
This book is perfect for my son who loves the outdoors and is constantly researching survival skills. I love that he chooses the books from the library or his collection of Bear Grylls’ books and then records what he thinks is valuable or important to remember! Found the handbook to be an excellent tool for keeping up with independent research and interest led learning!

Love it!
Really love this for homeschooling. It gets my kids researching and interested in things they could find useful someday. You get out of it what you put in to it. We go into a lot of detail with different parts and it can become almost like a secondary science.

I love these books. The whole line by Thinking Tree is fabulous and the best part is that my children love using them. This Science Handbook is the perfect addition to your homeschool curriculum. With space for tons of projects, the elements table and lots of study space for an infinite amount of scientific exploration, it's literally perfect. I can't state that enough. My kids are 5,7 and 9. We love science projects and this book is put together so well that science isn't stressful for us. It keeps all your stuff together in one book. I highly recommend it.

The Thinking Tree - Science Handbook and Portfolio I had high hopes for The Thinking Tree - Science Handbook and Portfolio, but overall I found it disappointing. The concept sounds great: an engaging, creative space for documenting research, discoveries, experiments, and projects, but in practice it felt quite repetitive. Most of the pages are simple prompts, titles, and decorative drawings. Beyond that, it’s essentially just a fancy exercise book. You’re expected to find your own books, resources, vocabulary, and study materials to fill it in. While I understand that independent learning and resource gathering are core parts of homeschooling, it left me wondering why the price is so high for something that provides very little actual content. If you’re already doing the work of choosing your books, and science projects, paying this much for a notebook with prompts doesn’t feel justified. It’s a nice idea, and some families might enjoy the structure, but for me it wasn’t particularly useful or worth the cost.
