a decent tagged classic
Two WWF attitude era pay per views which were sandwiched either side of summerslam 99,yes this dvd looked good on paper, the price was superb and i felt confident this would be a quality tagged classic, essentially it is but there is some filler, darn.Fully loaded 99 kicks off this double dvd and starts with the intercontiental championship being up for grabs, the champ was edge, who won the title a night prior in ontario, toronto, his home city!he went up against jeff jarrett who he beat on that night. The match was good, fast paced and entertaining, always a good way to start an event. The WWF tag team championships were contested next in a handicap match, the champions were matt and jeff hardy who also had michael hayes in their team and they went up against the acolytes. This match was ugly as sin,it really was scrappy, the hardys could hardly get going, hayes was a very noticable weak link,he had been retired for close to 5 years at this point i think,it was just a poor, poor match. The title matches kepy coming as the european championship was up next, the champion, mideon,in perhaps his worst ever match went up against d-lo brown, only one man looked interested in this match which meant it was rotten, one of the worst matches going in my mind, avoid. The much missed hardcore championship was up next as al snow continued his feud with the big bossman, snow was the champion and was at his most annoying as he was in the mode where his head was aching as his dollhead was pierced with steel, silly, anyway, the match was good, all over the arena,on the streets, cruel whacks over the head and on and on but it was largely enjoyable. The big show and kane fought next,a big man match granted but one of the better ones, the match flowed well and there was some great moves, bob holly as guest ref had little purpose but the match did the business. An iron circle match was up next, steve blackman and ken shamrock were the two men who went at it in a circle shaped by cars and wrestlers beeping horns and watching,i liked the idea,i liked the gung ho feel to the match also, the match was savage enough and was over quick enough to ensure i felt pleased with it.Two different factions of DX went head to head in a battle to win the rights to the name, the teams were road dogg and xpac who went up against chyna and billy gunn. This match wasnt overly serious and i found myself enjoying the somewhat zany feel to it,it was entertaining and who can ask for more.A strap match was up next as triple h went up against the rock, the winner would get a title shot at summerslam, this match was very entertaining, both wrestlers for obvious reasons had a close proximity to each other so there was plenty of wrestling and plenty of slaps and punches to the face,an exciting encounter with a good ending. The main event was next and was for the WWF title,it was a first blood match, which was indeed interesting as both stonecold who was champion and the undertaker were bleeding from earlier encounters in the evening, the match was excellent, vince was involved and this was action packed, fully loaded was a pretty good event in truth. The second disc on this tagged classic is unforgiven which followed on from summerslam, this event wasnt as good but contained some good moments, the refs strike at this event didnt really have much effect,so that was a storyline that died off not long after. The event opened with a lacklustre match, steve blackman went up against val venis. This was as generic as you could hope to see, very basic with little going for it,the crowd were unmoved by it and i felt this was a real fiasco, thankfully it doesnt last that long. The WWF european championship was contested next as the champ mark henry went up against his old friend d-lo brown. The match started with a dying feel but fortunately it improved and became a pretty good match, not bad going at all.Jeff jarrett fought chyna next, jarrett was the intercontiental champ and chyna as you may or may not know is a woman so this didnt feel that great to me,the match was silly in many ways and some of the in ring action was flimsy, there was some good moments but not a memorable match. The acolytes fought the dudley boyz next in a real scrappy match, the match contained some interferance which wasnt necessary, but to be fair the match was racing on without a driver if you catch my drift,no flow and nothing to dance about. The WWF womans title was contested next as ivory and luna went head to head in a hardcore rules bout, this match wasnt half bad, there was some good moments in it,better than some of the mens matches for sure. The WWF tag team titles were defended next as the champs, the new age outlaws went up against edge and christian. This was a very good match,a good pacey encounter with good understanding of wrestlings fundementals and a great will to win,a sure fire winner.Fuss was made in the build up to the next match for the hardcore title,a kennel from hell match was the setting,al snow and the big bossman were the entrants and dogs were meant to marshall the outer ring, they were there, mind you they had handlers who held onto them,it was shameful, the match was terrible as well,a joke in many ways.An unscheduled match between x-pac and chris jericho was up next and i expected plenty and was left annoyed as this was well off the pace, missed moves and a very pedestrian pace ensured that few liked this match,a wasted moment. The main event could save the day of course and it did to an extent.Six men, stonecold as enforcer, the winner to be the champ, simple as that, british bulldog, triple H,mankind, kane, the big show and the rock made up the sixpack of entrants. This match was frantic, energetic, enjoyable and a real battle,a quality end to a poor enough event. For value this release is up there with the best, for sheer quality results vary.
