Hi, can you tell me if the cap is 6mm or the rivet shaft? Thanks.

From the rivets I used, the Rivet head was 10mm and the rivet shaft 6mm. I put rivet into handle and cut leaving approx 4mm . Then with hammer with rounded head on a hard surface carefully hammered the cut end until the rivet was tight on handle and looked nice and rounded . Job done and spade back in service Hope this helpef

Any tips on getting the old rivet out??

Carefully file off one (or even both) "capped" ends of the old rivet and then use a drift tool ( e.g. a punch or an old nail or old bolt or bit of metal bar or similar hard material that is unlikely to deform or bend, etc) of a slightly smaller diameter so it doesn't get stuck in the hole as you knock out the old rivet gently tapping with a hammer to start with until you get your aim right (safety) (best done alone if safety is breached and a hit thumb causes profuse swearing of an Anglo-Saxon origin!! ). Unless there is an octopus handy to provide the extra hands that always seem to be needed for these sort of (ad)ventures, I recommend holding the handle securely while doing this e.g. in a vice or do it over a hole in the ground so the old rivet goes into the hole while treading firmly with foot to secure handle while hammering/striking drift to drive the old rivet out.

do you need to heat the rivets?

Hi, I didn't heat the rivets I put them and made sure that one side of the spade with the handle firmly in handle is on a firm base, drill a hole through the wood and handle, push the rivet through the hole and keep hitting the small side of the rivet with the hammer . T rivet should spread out, stopping the spade from falling out of the handle
