"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." With those words, millions of readers were introduced to Stephen King's Roland - an implacable gunslinger in search of the enigmatic Dark Tower, powering his way through a dangerous land filled with ancient technology and deadly magic. Now, in a comic book personally overseen by King himself, Roland's past is revealed! Sumptuously drawn by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove, adapted by long-time Stephen King expert Robin Furth (author of Stephen King's The Dark Tower: A Concordance) and scripted by New York Times bestseller Peter David, this series delves in depth into Roland's origins - the perfect introduction to this incredibly realized world; while long-time fans will thrill to adventures merely hinted at in the novels. Be there for the very beginning of a modern classic of fantasy literature! Collects Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #1-7. Review: The Dark Tower Brought To Life! - Ok first of all if you are reading the Dark Tower Seires and are thinking of perchasing these graphic novels for your own good WAIT UNITIL YOU FINISH THE BOOKS! There are sum serious spoilers here! I wanted to buy this whilst reading through Kings masterpiece series i was glad now i didnt!. After finishing the books i decided to buy the graphic novels...WOW Firstly the presentation is great: sturdy hard back graphic novels with a leather bound case which is covered by a slip cover, the glossy paper is of the finest quality and in total makes sure these novels will stand the test of time. Secondly the artwork in these seires by Lee and Isanove is flawless. It is very clear they have read the books and the project has been overseen by King. Probably the best artwork ive seen in any graphic novel or comic! These are great stand alone Graphic Novels for people who dont wish to read the dark tower series. For fans of the books such as myself it is with great pleasure to see Kings work litterlay come to life. The charicters and places look just how they are described as in the books and no stone is left unturned much of the dialoge between charicters is the same which makes the work even more authentic. The graphic novels stand there own aswell as they give you and even clearer insight to Kings world of the dark tower. Unputdownable!
This is brilliant. Speaking as someone who doesn't read Graphic Novels and who has never read the Dark Tower books - I loved this and I read it over two nights and was sorry when I came to the end. The artwork is beautiful and the tale gripping. The only minor complaint is that this is set in a very macho world and there is at times the vaguest suggestion that it was written by someone who hates women. However, if you can put that aside this is a wonderful read.

Fair
Quite good, illustrations are quite good and it's nice to see the story of wizard and glass and some of the gunslinger told in a new format with some new angles. The dark tower books, of course, are the ultimate. But this might be a good way in for people who don't like reading and cannot keep waiting for the perpetually stuck in development hell tv / movie version of the series that keeps getting mooted...

Excellent quality
I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend who is a huge Stephen King fan, and she loved it. I read it as well and I enjoy the art style. The book itself is constructed very well and is durable, like other books in this series we have read. I have nothing bad to say about it.

Very Very Good
I have read the series twice and saw the comic version (OK, sorry, graphic novel). while this does not follow the books exactly, it is just superb. Well made product, pictures are excellent and give a different view of the novels. Definitely a collectors item if you are a fan of the one who 'deals in lead'.

The Beginning of the Neverending
Shortly after graduating high school (too many years ago to admit to), I read my second Stephen King novel. I decided to take on King's 800+ page epic called The Stand (updated in the 90s to 1100+ pages!)...this after finishing his awesome story about young Ms. Charlie McGee called Firestarter . After those two novels I was hooked on anything King...couldn't wait for his next release. In 1982 King brought back the main antagonist (albeit under a different name) of The Stand for the beginning of what turned into an awesome seven-part series called The Dark Tower. Flash-forward to 2007 and here we are with a new beginning to The Dark Tower series, a prequel, a graphic novel called The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born. King worked closely with Marvel, his personal assistant of several years (Robin Furth) and an experienced comic book writer (Peter David) in order to deliver this inaugural graphic novel adaptation of his work. Jae Lee (another experienced comic booker) did the amazing artwork. And the result?...the beginning of what will hopefully go on for many years...a neverending adaptation to a neverending story one can only hope. Unlike a King novel that takes a guy like me days (sometimes weeks) to finish, The Gunslinger Born takes about an hour. And readers are rewarded with King's signature prose and stunning images to accompany every word. The story starts with Roland Deschain's Gunslinger School "graduation test" (rest assured this ain't no written test), then follows Roland and friends as they embark on their fisrt assignment by the elders. Another chapter in the series titled Dark Tower: The Long Road Home is slated for release in October 2008, and I'm pretty excited about it. But I can say that I'd look forward much more to taking The Dark Tower novels and converting them with this writing/artistic crew into graphic novels for an amazing, refreshing re-read. After all...it's been 25 years since I read the first Dark Tower novel, and the way my memory has been working lately, a graphic novel adaptation would be like reading it for the first time. Regardless, whether you've ever read a comic book, graphic novel, Dark Tower or Stephen King story for that matter, The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born is a great place to escape into a world that goes on forever. Do ya kennit? Add it to your cart.
