Posted photos of my little experiment - Impressive stuff!
I was very curious as to what sort of results to expect from this product (bought it for our white sofa since the retailer's "protection plan" was a joke), so I decided to do a little experiment and apply red wine to a treated and untreated portion of material (photos added for you to see). The spill on the Scotchgarded portion beaded up while the unprotected portion soaked the wine up right away. I let it sit for a few minutes and eventually the wine did absorb into the material. When I tried to remove the stain from both sections (using only water), the red wine actually came out of the treated side while the untreated side appeared to be stained. The results were very impressive! I'm on the "what else can I apply this to?" bandwagon now. Amount needed - I treated an extra large sofa and a small fully upholstered chair with two coats each and used 4.5 cans (10 oz size). Found that using painters tape to mark the untreated areas helped me remember where I had or had not spayed since I couldn't really see a significant change in the fabric's appearance and when I would look away to open my second can of Scotchgard I would lose my place. Smell. If you've ever stepped into a small nail salon that applies acrylic nails, that's about what this stuff smells like to me. Since I currently live in a high rise, I was concerned about the ventilation requirements since I can only open a patio door and crack a window. I applied one coat to my sofa, got caught up on a phone call and didn't leave the room, causing a slight headache (totally my fault). When it came time for the second coat, I was sure to go to a different room after spraying the item and had no issues whatsoever. Just sharing my mistake in case anyone else without outdoor space is thinking of using this product - it's very possible and very much worth doing, but just be sure to leave the area until the odor dissipates.

5 Jackets?
I purchased this to add some water repellency to an inexpensive, lightweight cotton windbreaker. It was my first time to use Scotchgard, so I read the can carefully and started an exercise of trial and error. The can said it was enough for 5 jackets, so I had plenty, right? Well, it also said to coat until wet for testing purposes, so I figured that may be the goal, but apparently it's not, because I ran out before finishing the hood. At almost $12 a can, it's not a cheap solution for a cheap jacket, but now I'll need to buy another can. Update: I finished the hood, but it's been dry where I live, so I just stuck a sleeve under a running faucet. I tried this before applying Scotchgard and the fabric just soaked up the water. Now most of the water runs off, but a little still gets through. This is okay for me, because I just wanted a little protection in light rain. As long as it's light, I don't think enough water will get through to make any difference, but I'm not sure how much it would help in a heavy downpour. I'll also mention that the can says it's better to apply 2 light coats and I obviously applied one very heavy coat. Also, I bought the 2nd can at the big blue store and it was half the price of what I paid here.

Hard to stop once you start using it
This product is your best friend for the rainy season. I originally bought this for waterproofing a coat that lost the waterproof layer after years of use in all kinds of weather. When the bottle arrived I started waterproofing the coat. And shoes. And boots. And backpacks. Pretty much everything that needed to be waterproofed in the house got a layer of this product on and it was magic!! When water drops on you, it will simply fall down, off the piece of clothing or fabric furniture it fell on. The microscopic silicon cells contained in the spray block anything from wetting or dirtying whatever surface you apply it on, making your stuff last way longer and saving you a lot of money and time in cleaning / laundry. In order to apply the product, you want to be (possibly outside of your house) but if this doesn't work, you can always be in a large room. All you have to do is point the spray towards the item you want to waterproof and start spraying while keeping the bottle vertical and a bit far from the surface you are coating. Initially, there will be a strong smell coming from the liquid spray, but don't panic. Just let the product dry and the odor will be completely gone from your clothes. If you want to make really sure that nothing gets through, you can always double treat your fabric. Just way a few hours for the initial layer to dry and then apply a second one that will keep all the water and spills away from the item. The bottle is enough for multiple items. In my case some of them were even pretty big and the liquid was enough to use on a large coat, a jacket, two pairs of shoes and a backpack (all double layered) and there was still material left over for another session. I strongly suggest this, as it's going to keep you dry through the winter.

Best price I could find, we used it to protect white blazer. So far so good, each time blazer is washed we coat it after, and there have been no lasting stains yet.

We have a 3 seater sofa with a light coloured fabric upholstery and were concerned that it would get dirty soon and hence decided to buy a can of the 3M fabric protector. Once the product arrived, I decided to apply the spray on the sofa. One has to cover all non-sprayable parts of the sofa (for example wooden armrests and legs) etc, as the spray can leave stains on them that are difficult to remove. I generously applied multiple coatings of the spray and left the same to dry. Initially, the fabric felt a bit rough, but after using the sofa for a couple of days, the texture of the fabric seemed to be back to normal. Some months later, I was having packing a container of fish curry and used the sofa to hold it. Unfortunately, I managed to spill a significant amount of the gravy on to the sofa and the cushions. I was able to immediately open the cushion cover, but the only thing I could do with the sofa was to wipe it with a damp cloth. Once it dried, we found absolutely no signs of the spilled curry. Hats off the 3M fabric protector!

I bought this product for the first time after coming across a lady on YouTube recommending it. I used it on my canvas bag and fabric sofa; and I am glad I did. Some hot chocolate accidentally spilled onto my sofa recently and I was able to clean it off more easily than I imagine if I hadn’t applied this product. A good product.
