Jake, that's a very good question. The short answer is that most home brewer's will use 1 pack in a 5 gallon batch. However, most people tend to under-pitch and use less than the correct amount of yeast. The professionally recommended does is 1g per 1L according to the manufacturer. This works out to be about 19g in 5 gallons which is just under 2 packs of yeast. The amount of yeast you use will obviously affect the success of your fermentation but it will also affect different aspects of the flavor of the final beer. There is room for experimentation with how much you use to get the character that you are going for. Thanks!
