Doctor's Best Reponse on ALA vs R-ALA- They Don't Know Either
Well I've only been taking this as well as the R-ALA for 2 weeks and don't have health problems- just trying to prevent my skin from aging so can't say how well it works. I have, however, been trying to definitively discover the difference between the R-Lipoic and regular ALA; here is my correspondence: Question: Hi; I enjoy your MSM and alpha lipoic acid products and was wondering what the difference is in effectiveness between the regular 600mg ALA and the R-Lipoic Acid. From what I understand the R-form is superior since it's the only form the body can absorb. However even if only 50% of the 600mg was working efficiently that would still be 200mg more than in the 100mg R-Lipoic form and therefore a more potent product? What do you suggest? Response: Thank you for your interest in Doctor's Best products. Your question regarding Alpha Lipoic Acid and Stabilized R Lipoic Acid is a good question but unfortunately not one we can make a determination. The reason Doctor's Best offers both forms is because of the varying opinions offered in the worlds of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in relation to this subject. Bioavailabilty is the main issue in question and it is realized this factor can vary from one individual to another. Our only advice can be to continue to take your current regimen if you are experiencing the intended benefit. We appreciate your support of Doctor's Best products and look forward to your continued patronage. So I guess no one REALLY knows for sure if R-ALA is that much more beneficial... I posted on the R-ALA product too so everyone can review this information. Update: This alpha lipoic acid is sourced from China- not because of the buyout by a Chinese company- it was sourced from there before as well. I may consider switching to a brand that gets there alpha lipoic elsewhere but it's a hassle to figure out since most brands just list place of manufacture and not the source of individual ingredients.

Restores liver function
I first took AlA iv as part of Hep C treatment. Pure ALA was given twice a day with Vit B shots. It is essential to combine Vit B with ALA for it to work. Not only does it eat up available sugar in your body it helps restore normal liver function. After the treatment I continued with oral ALA daily until now about 10 years. My Hep C is gone now and my liver functions have all returned to normal. Am I going to stop taking it now? I don't think so. This capsule is the strongest available at 600 MG. Others are 200 - 300. So this is the one I take and it is also the most economical.

Alpha-lipoic acid combined with cinnulin PF works about half as well as the best prescription medicines for type 2 diabetes
Alpha-lipoic acid combined with cinnulin PF lowers the serum glucose readings of type 2 diabetics by about half as much as metformin (Glucophage) alone or pioglitazone (Actos) alone. Combining generic metformin with generic pioglitazone remains the best treatment for most type 2 diabetics because the vast majority of type 2 diabetics are suffering from insulin resistance and not from lack of insulin. However, these two highly praised drugs (metformin and pioglitazone) will require a prescription. Cinnulin PF is better than cinnamon because cinnamon has toxic inclusions which make it impractical to use for prolonged periods of time. Type 2 diabetics who decide to go with alpha-lipoic acid plus cinnulin PF might benefit by also swallowing acetyl-l-carnitine capsules (prevents diabetic neuropathy), drinking green tea (slightly lowers weight and also slightly lowers blood glucose), swallowing psyllium capsules (prevents constipation and also slightly lowers blood glucose), eating 3 shiitake mushrooms daily (substantially boosts immune system and also slightly lowers blood glucose), drinking olive leaf tea (substantially boosts immune system and also slightly lowers blood glucose), drinking fenugreek tea or eating fenugreek seeds, sprouts, or leaves (definitely lowers blood glucose and protects overall health), losing weight (reduces the amount of tumor necrosis factor alpha in their blood, the main cause of their insulin resistance), swallowing several krill oil softgels daily (prevents and treats high blood pressure, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic cardiovascular disease), swallowing one 2,000 IU vitamin D3 softgel daily (prevents diabetic cardiovascular disease and substantially boosts immune system), swallowing one 6mg lutein softgel daily (protects the retina during diabetic retinopathy), eating Japanese natto or swallowing nattokinase capsules (prevents diabetic blood clots), swallowing up to seven 150mg benfotiamine capsules daily (prevents and treats neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and cardiopathy but does not lower blood glucose), and by swallowing up to 3 amla capsules daily (strong antioxidants definitely work very well at lowering blood glucose). WARNING: Do not try to taste the contents of an alpha-lipoic acid capsule. The powder inside the capsule will very likely cause you to choke to death! Do not doubt me! If you want to eat a capsule deliciously, try fucoidan capsules. You'll end up choosing to slowly eat rather than quickly swallow every capsule in your fucoidan bottle. Update: The contents of the Doctor's Best Alpha-Lipoic Acid600 capsules that I purchased in April, 2013 are now solid bright yellow in color. In the past, the contents of these capsules had always been pure white in color. The ingredients listed on the pill bottles have not changed. There's nothing new or different written on the pill bottles explaining this dramatic color change. I telephoned Doctor's Best but they have chosen to pretend that nothing has changed. My best guess is that this color change is a decision by the Chinese, who manufacture most of the alpha-lipoic acid that is sold in the U.S. It's highly probable that the chemical inside the capsules of Doctor's Best Alpha-Lipoic Acid600 that I have been buying is made in China. Equal (aspartame powder) had once been bright white in color, then changed to dull yellow for about 3 years during the mid-1990s, then changed back to bright white. The reason for the color change to dull yellow was to save money on the cost of production. The reason for the color change back to bright white was decreased sales due to consumer dislike. There was no change in the delicious taste of Equal during the time these color changes occurred. According to Wikipedia, "Lipoic acid appears physically as a yellow solid...." This makes me wonder why the Chinese made it look white to begin with. My biggest concern, therefore, is that the Chinese may or may not have tampered with the ratio of the 2 enantiomers - the RLA to SLA ratio. [RLA is considered more beneficial than SLA, which may be only slightly beneficial]. My lesser concern is why Doctor's Best needs to keep this color change a secret, an indication of bad morals. Doctor's Best's Best Response: "Our Alpha-Lipoic Acid is manufactured in the U.S., not China. We have not heard anything regarding the ratio of the R-enantiomer versus the S-enantiomer. We would assume that the ratio has not changed from the past. It's normal and natural for alpha-lipoic acid to keep changing in color from off-white to bright yellow. It is the active ingredient, alpha-lipoic acid, that keeps changing in color and not the modified cellulose (vegetarian capsule), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide, or rice powder. Email us at [email protected] and we would be glad to email you our testing results for a recent lot of Best Alpha-Lipoic Acid. Our Certificate of Analysis for Best Alpha-Lipoic Acid says that the appearance is a slightly yellow crystal powder." [The Certificate of Analysis that Doctor's Best emailed me was partly in the Japanese language].
