Not for 5 year olds
I bought this kit for my 5 year old and it caused no end of frustration because it's just a bit too challenging for her age. I would guess it's more for ages like 7 or 8 plus.

Good but not perfect!
A bit disappointed with this. The hook is plastic and meeses up the wool when working with it. Everything else is great. Better to use a crochet hook with it.

Item is not for children under 8 years of age in my opinion
I love the spool knitting but this is not for children under 8 years of age in my opinion. Too many steps and my 5 year grandchild found it difficult. She is very good and arts and crafts but found this challenging and lost interest quickly. Great gift for older children.

Good for kids. Big loops require a stronger lifting tool.

Difficult to use
This is difficult to use for 3 reasons:1. The barrel is too long - we had to use a crochet hook to pull the yarn down through the center.2. The u-shaped wire 'hooks' are straight. They need to have a bit of a bend at the top (like other ones do) so the yarn doesn't come off of other hooks while you're moving the one next to it.3. The little plastic stick thing they give you is cheap and it pointed at the end and more like a needle or knife than something to manipulate yarn with. It simply does not do what you need to do with it.I was hoping this might be something a little easier for my granddaughter to manipulate than crocheting, but it isn't.The second star is for the yarn, buttons and other extra goodies that comes with the kit. These are cute and of pretty good quality.

Cute
This is a cute little set. The instructions were hard to interpret, but I was able to figure it out. Great value for what you receive.

Better for older kids
Purchased this for my 6-yr old who learned to knit recently, thinking it would be an easy, fun craft toy based on previous reviews. The instructions were for the most part easy to follow, but it did take me a good while to figure out how to "spool" knit properly. They also have a section about "tubing", but I need more time to figure out how to do that. Those instructions were confusing IMO. Overall, would recommend for children ages 8 and older since it does require some dexterity and adult help for younger kids. My daughter is 6, and I had to hold on to the spool while she used the plastic needle to pull the stitch off the spokes. Not what I expected for a toy marketed for ages 6+ but still a good craft toy IMO for the older ones.

Very hard to use
I purchased this about 18 months ago for my daughter's 5th birthday. I had never done or seen spool knitting before, so I looked at the instructions to learn how to do it. Those instructions were totally useless for me. Couldn't begin to figure out what they were trying to get me to do. I then found a Youtube video that was so incredibly clear and easy to understand /watch?[...], and started using the spool from this kit. But it was quite hard to use and I ended up with carpal tunnel type symptoms that put my hand out of commission for a couple weeks. It has caused problems off and on since then, and prior to that, I'd never had hand/wrist problems. A couple months ago, I found out you can easily make your own spool. I used a toilet paper tube, craft sticks, and duct tape. I covered the tops of the craft sticks with the duct tape (helps the yarn slide and not get caught in the splintering craft sticks) and taped them at even intervals on the tube. Works like a charm! My 3 oldest kids (8, 6, and 5 this week) can now do spool knitting :) You might also want to check[...] for more great spool knitting info.Pros: Comes with fun yarn colors, things to embellish the projects, and a few projects to make.Cons: Written instructions are pitiful, spool is very hard to use, and the inside of the spool is very rough, making it hard to get the yarn through the very narrow center.

Ok--wish it was better made
I had one of these when I was little and it was fun to make a long rope of knitted yarn to use in projects, but this particular knitting device isn't sanded or sealed inside the hole where the rope comes out, so it doesn't just come out. You have to pull on it regularly. This proved to be much more difficult and my kids got pretty frustrated. I wish this was a little better made so it was easier to use, like the one I had as a child.

Pretty colors and appealing projects for little girls
All inclusive kit. Pretty colors and appealing projects for little girls. Large spool knitter makes it easier to manipulate yarn. Recommend using crochet hook vs plastic needle provided in kit.

This is a Pretty Package
A modern concept of an antique knitting spool, and it takes thicker yarn or string. The package includes all you need to get started and good directions for use. The best tool to use with it is a small hook, not included, but the whole package is well done and gets the projects started and inspired.I would recommend it for 11 year old and up.

Adult supervision
I bought this for a 7 year old who has been asking about knitting because I thought this would be a good start. It has directions but the are not exactly easy to follow. It was hard to start but once an adult started it she was able to do it. The spool would also be a good option for making I-cord.
