Very tongue-in-cheek and Vilmer is effectively played over the top. Not my favorite TCM, but worth a watch if you're a fan. Also very cool to see the Lost Pines Forest in a film.

ScreamFactory's Blu-Ray Release review
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Next Generation (aka The Return of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) is the black sheep of the series. It's the most hated and it is outcasted by fans sometimes. Since it's release, it received a transfer to DVD and now Blu-Ray by Screamfactory. Let me back up a bit.... The Next Generation is about 4 teens on prom night who end up taking a wrong turn to some back woods. Unbeknownst to them, there is a murderous family who lives there and they soon find themselves trying to survive against the killer family. The movie stars (at the time) an unknown Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey. Both actors have separated themselves from the film entirely. The movie is definitely way out there compared to the other Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies and it's more of a comedy than a horror. The characters don't tie into the 3 movies before it and the only thing to tie them is Leatherface who is suffering an identity crisis in the movie. The theory of Leatherface being a woman killer is brought to life in this film. The family is forgettable and not scary, although for some reason I did enjoy the performance of the realtor (Don't know why, but I would have like to seen her in another film). The victims aren't even worth liking, which is sad for Renee Zellweger as she always gives a great performance and brings out the best in her characters (like in Case 39). The plot even gets weird by the third act, which I won't ruin if you plan to watch this film. So why did Screamfactory transfer this film? In my opinion, it's the only TCM that has yet to be transferred to Blu-ray. We saw a 40th anniversary release of the original last year, earlier this year we got a transfer of Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III to Blu-Ray and now Screamfactory released Next Generation to complete our TCM collections. Next Generation was suppose to release earlier this year (originally in June, then August, then October and finally released in December) but they ran into a lot of problems with getting rights to the film. As it was mentioned, the screening for the film (then titled "The Return of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre") did very poorly and the film was hidden until Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey's careers took off, it then became a cash grab film. So I'm assuming they didn't want to release the film in anymore transfers and this could be why Screamfactory had trouble getting the rights. The Blu-Ray offers some new features, which usually Screamfactory goes all out on their releases, but with all the trouble getting the film, not much could be added. The release has the Theatrical version and the Director's cut of the film. The Director's cut offers only a few minutes of additional footage of Jenny (Zellweger) and her abusive stepfather. Bonus features include behind the scenes footage, a few interviews (with actor Tyler Cone, special effects creator and director of photography), still gallery and trailers. So not too much of features. The transfer of the film (which I have only watched the Director's cut so far) is very shotty in the beginning. It says on the back of the box that the Director's Cut is in Standard Definition which I can understand for those extra few minutes of scenes but yet the rest isn't even cleaned up a little. It's like watching it on VHS. Even the DVD version I own that is the Director's cut of the film, looks better in those scenes than this transfer. I even noticed the sound kind of cut out for a quick second in the first 3 minutes of the film. I'm not sure how the theatrical version is because I haven't watch it yet but, the Director's cut version could have used some polishing up after the many delays. The features are kind of lackluster but, I wouldn't hold that against Screamfactory as trying to get anyone to cooperate with this film must be impossible. All in all, I kind of wish there was more to this release as the company kept promising it would be worth the wait, sadly, there really isn't much here. I would recommend it if you are completing your TCM collections on Blu-Ray but otherwise I wouldn't recommend spending the $25+ for this release and wait for it to go on sale. The extra scenes of the director's cut version, really isn't worth putting out the money for a minute or two of footage. I'm giving the release a 3 out of 5 as this is not Screamfactory's best work but it's not their worst. They tried their best and it didn't work out. Maybe the next transfer will see better features in the future. Correction/Update: I would like to add something that was discovered upon watching the special features of the Blu-Ray disc. After watching the 3 interviews I figured the only thing left to watch is the Behind the scenes footage and check out the still gallery. Long and behold, there is NO behind the scenes footage or still gallery on the disc. I reached out to Shout! Factory (Screamfactory's main company) and asked them about why I couldn't find these features on disc. Shout! Factory responded saying that these two features were originally suppose to be on the disc but didn't make it to final cut. The packaging that says it has these two features got out by mistake and were meant to be removed from the artwork before it shipped. So if you have one with this mistake, just know it does not include Behind the scenes footage or still gallery.

Not the best
Not one of the best in the series and remakes. Leather face just isn’t the leather face of old sadly. But at least it’s another dysfunctional family to carry on the tradition so to speak. Main bad guy character was a joke though. They could’ve done a lot better with this movie if they had wanted to. But sadly it just didn’t go that way. Not saying buy it by any means, but at least watch it once.

Everything about Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation points to it not only being a huge underground success, but achieving some mainstream notoriety as well, just as its grandpappy did twenty years previous. The original writer comes back to helm the flick in his directorial debut, and the casting folks manage to land a few stars who look like they're on their way up. And my, did they strike a goldmine: two of the movie's stars are Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey. I mean, this has every necessary Hallmark of underground reverence. here was great potential here (unlike the other films, Leatherface's house this time is located close to a decent-sized commercial area) to have some real fun with the concept, but instead Henkel and company went with the same straight horror-comedy mix that the whole series works with. (Only the recent remake of the original takes itself at all seriously, which is not necessarily a bad thing.) The comedy is as mean-spirited and ugly as it is in the first film, which some people are going to hate and some will take as a welcome return to form (one figures Henkel was probably responsible for most of the original film's gallows humor). As usual, there's a lot going on that makes no real sense within the story (McConaughey's Rube Goldberg-esque prosthetic leg, the insane CIA agent played by a chilling John Gale, etc.), but again, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some of the acting is sharply self satirical and darkly humorous wacky, strange weird, sometimes you expect that from a B-grade horror flick. But it succeeds at what it attempts, in a gruesome, low-budget sort of way, and doesn't deserve anywhere near the amount of revilement it has received.
