Very emotional slow burn
I love the amount of world building that has gone into the novel. Throughout the series there is character growth, and I am very much appreciative of how it reflects some of the real-world issues currently surrounding us. I could parse several instances of criticism of the way our world is through the fictional place that is Emarion. Would I have liked more smut? Yes. Does it have a place on my shelf next to ACOTAR, TOG, Fourth Wing and Clarissa Broadbent? Also yes. A very well deserved space if for nothing else than the world building.

Not for me
Really disappointed hearing all the rave reviews. Writing is lazy and seems like a rehash of a number of other books and shows. The writing is not skilled at all... the author tried hard to make the characters stand out, by trying to make Diem look badass by giving her typical quips but it just seemed forced. The other characters seemed one dimensional too. The whole vibe of the book just seemed to lack magic or any 'spark' actually. There are so many other far better fantasy books that released in the past year.

This book is a hidden gem in the fantasy sphere that deserves all the love and recognition. A stunning fantasy debut, thick with intrigue, drama, tension, and with a slow burn hate to love romance that has me shipping intensely and praying for the other books in the series to magically fall in my open hands. What immediately stood out to me was the worldbuilding, presented in a way that wasn’t overwhelming in the slightest. The concept of The Kindred vs. Old Gods, the Descended ruling class vs. mortals, magic vs. lack thereof, was all so fascinating. The Descended are basically a mix between gods and nearly-immortal beings such as fae, and as such I was very interested in them. Let’s start by saying that a lot of the Descended we saw so far? Not very good people, but it’s impossible not to be curious about them when our protagonist herself, Diem, doesn’t know a whole lot about them. Why is that? Good question, and one you’ll find yourself asking a lot while you read. And read you must, because I need to talk about this book with others. This book doesn’t make it easy to stick entirely with one side. On the one hand there’s the eternal fascination with magical beings that makes the Descended very intriguing characters to figure out, but on the other we have the mortals who have been crushed by their unfair rule for centuries. Henri, Diem’s childhood best friend, is a prime example of mortals who have every reason to hate the Descended. When you figure out his reasons, can you blame him for joining the rebels? No. Characters instead like the Commander, Diem’s father who led armies for the Descended, and Teller, who’s the only mortal to attend school with the Descended, and Princess Lily, who is friends with Teller, show that not everything is quite as black and white as it seems. This sort of shade of gray in a story is exactly what I like in my fantasy. Then of course there is the romance. The author set up a slow burn that could potentially end me. Yes, I’m talking about Diem and Prince Luther. I’ve mentioned him already, and I’ll probably talk about him for a long time, because I fell in love. He’s broody, might appear cold, but in truth he feels a lot, and he’s very brutal to those who disrespect him and the people he cares about. This man can be a softie big brother and also the prince who threatens to remove arms. There’s still a lot we don’t know about him, and I have theories about the couple that make me very excited to continue the series. Diem is a headstrong, determined and kind woman that I appreciated a lot. The only times I wish I could have talked some sense into her was when she let her temper get the better of her where the Descended are involved, like at the palace where she goes against her mentor’s guidance and gets them both into trouble. A little too reckless in dangerous situations like that. The buildup to the ending was spectacular. I am so looking forward to the sequel, which comes out in July. My heart is soaring!

This was a great debut novel by author Penn Cole. She has written a world filled with magic, action, suspense, mystical creatures, a rebellion and a fractures kingdom that you don't quite know yet who to root for. The fmc deals with the age old delimit of knowing one's self, finding her voice and where she stands in her version of right and wrong. This book has an intriguing storyline which has definitely place many easter eggs for the readers consumption and I can't wait to see where they all lead and what will be explored in future books. The love triangle can't really be called a love tringle, iykyk. The ending left so many questions, seriously so many... so glad I can jump straight into the next book.
