Do you recommend this case if I’m primarily going to be typing with my iPad on my lap?

Not likely. The balance is very touchy meaning you pretty much have to have the tablet and keyboard on a stable table platform to prevent tipping and to be able to type effectively on the keyboard. You might consider the ESR folio version which means you use the iPad keypad to type. I have both the ESR folio and the keypad case and the folio is the one that I would likely use in your situation. Be advised the inner sleeves of the ESR folio versus the ESR keyboard case are not in any practical sense interchangeable meaning you need to change out the inner sleeve to be compatible with the respective ESR device (bummer--ESR should reengineer to fix that problem--in fact I am considering returning the ESR keyboard case because of that).

Will the stand work without the case?

No, there are magnets in the case that need it to hold your iPad on. If you are asking if the keyboard will work without being attached to the case, yes, it's just using Bluetooth.
