Highly practical upgrade for liquid culture work (especially with tall jars)
Highly practical upgrade for liquid culture work (especially with tall jars) I picked up these 16 gauge, 5-inch Luer lock needles for liquid culture work, and they’ve become one of those small upgrades that noticeably improves workflow. The biggest advantage is the length. With standard shorter needles, I was constantly tilting or repositioning jars just to reach the bottom, which makes the process more awkward and less controlled. With these, I can leave a tall jar flat on the surface and reach all the way down without adjusting anything. That alone makes draws much more consistent. The 16 gauge diameter is also a good fit for thicker solutions. Compared to narrower needles, flow is significantly smoother and less prone to clogging when drawing denser material. It’s much easier to pull a consistent, well-mixed sample instead of struggling with slow or uneven fills. Another benefit I didn’t expect is how much control the extra length gives you. Being able to move the tip around at different depths lets you draw from specific areas instead of just whatever happens to be near the surface. That makes a difference when you’re trying to work efficiently. The Luer lock connection feels secure and threads cleanly onto standard syringes—no issues with slipping or leaks during use. A couple of quick notes: * Because these are longer and wider than typical needles, they require a bit more careful handling and storage. * Make sure your syringes are compatible with Luer lock fittings (most are, but worth checking). Overall, if you regularly work with liquids in jars or other deeper containers, these are a very practical upgrade. They make the process easier, more controlled, and more efficient.

Perfect.
They're sharp so they'll cut through self-healing ports, but I found they still tended to cut a little plug out in passing. Still, much easier to pierce with a point then force with a blunt tip. I was concerned they might be a little short for my wide mouth quart jar, but they turned out to be a perfect size, so I can recommend them for pint and quart jars. They're great. These are the kind you need for doing liquid culture sampling if you don't have a fancy lid with a sampling tube built in. I wish they were less expensive. I don't yet know how well they'll hold up to sterilizing in a pressure cooker, but they're worth the convenience and efficiency even if they end up being only useful for a single insertion. I do wish the cover for the needle was more like those for the more common sizes--one that snaps on. The covers are just straws.

Just what I needed
Just what I needed to reach the bottom of my culture jars without having to tip. I really don't like to have sterilize needles for re-use though. But the price is definitely high for single use. Would like to be able to a larger quantity at a more reasonable per unit price.

dont want to tip your LC jars? buy these.
I use these to extract Liquid Culture. I was sick of having to tilt my jars and risking an accident. They reach deep enough that with a 1qt jar I only have to tilt it a little at the very end of use. So for my use case they get the job done.

Nice!
Very long, large needle, get it where ever you need, reach is no problem, seem very clean and sterile.

These are a clear game changer!
Wow, why didn’t these exist sooner?! These have completely transformed my process! If you’ve ever used a liquid culture jar, you know the struggle – tilting the jar, trying to draw up that stubborn, thick colony of mycelium, with zero control over what you get. It’s always such a hassle. But as soon as these arrived, I had to give them a go – and let me tell you, what a game-changer! No more awkward tilting, no more chasing that thick mycelium as it moves away from you. This made the whole process so much smoother and easier. I’m never going back!
