Orange garbage. The bead gets stuck in the vent when you try to blow through it leaving you with a choked wheeze instead of a shrill whistle. I can't get the striker to make a single spark, the mirror is foggy, the cap on the waterproof compartment cross-threads easily, and it's difficult to tell if the compass is floating properly when using it. Not sure if the waterproof compartment is actually waterproof but I have my doubts. One will understand a sad irony in the name of this product if they try to use this whistle for survival.

I definitely would not rely on this for survival, it's really more of a toy. That said, I purchased it for our Cub Scouts Webelos den, and it will work well. When the kids are out hiking in city parks with adults, this is perfect. It will teach the Scouts responsibility to remember to pack it in their hiking packs, but if it breaks, it's not a big deal.When they cross over to Scouts BSA and start hiking in larger parks and doing more camping, I will buy much better quality whistles with extras.I purchased 6. The mirrors on all of them have come unglued, and the caps are difficult to screw back on. I expect I'll need to help the Scouts replace the caps a lot. The compass doesn't seem very accurate, but will work as a great training tool for the Scouts to at least find approximate N, E, S, and W. Don't rely on it for much more than that. I haven't quite figured out how you are supposed to use the strike area to start a fire; it's just a piece of plastic. That might be a good thing though since the Scouts are too young to be starting fires without close adult supervision.As long as you have low expectations of this product, you'll be happy.

The reason for purchasing was the mirror inside.However, without using the item, I opened the topand the mirror fell out. The adhesive glue used wasold, dry and brittle so much the mirror just felloff.

Shipped and arrived quickly and well. I carry fire steel and long butane lighters. But this is light and dandy for keeping matches dry and the lanyard keeps them handy. The cardinal rule is when you need a gps the battery will always croak. So having a compass looking up at me is comforting and the whistle is essential for herding kids in dense foliage.I don't know if it would scare a bear, but if it's not his first rodeo, it might save him getting sprayed.

We all love this whistle, we have been experimenting with all the extras and still have yet to use itin a outdoor activity. Maybe during our camping trip this year. As far as the kids can tell everything on it works great.They put a tissue in the water tight container for an hour under water and it stayed dry.Hope it works during a canoe trip.

Bought this for my emergency kit. Completely perfect. I was able to fit a few little things inside and I like that it has that string to put it around your neck. I'm definitely buying more for my family.

Do Not plan on using these in a Real Emergency! The ball in the whistle gets caught up if you blow in it hard and it sounds like whistling thru your teeth without any volume. The 1" round mirror falls out of the lid when you open the container. The compass could never be very accurate if at all work correctly. Survival??? Don't expect much.

You get what you pay for. These are very inexpensive and a great backup when things go south. I wouldn't be one to trust the compass much, but love the idea of the whistle (plenty loud), the compartment for waterproof matches and the signal mirror. For the offered price though, what more could you expect?

Arrived in a timely manner. It has space inside it to hold a few waterproof matches or magnesium dust for fire starting thanks to the flint on the outside. Appears to be waterproof.

Being an inexpensive product it meets with my expectations. I'm thinking it should fit in quite nicely with my otheremergancy gear I keep with my Skidoo..

It's far too large to be considered a serious piece of kit. No more than a children's toy, gave mine away to the nephew.

Mirror fell out, so had to glue it back in, Other than that works fine , room to store a fire making kit. and a bit of tinder so Ideal for Kayaking.
